Obituary of Margaret Thacker (nee Brazier)
Formerly of St. Thomas, ON, passed away at her residence, Chartwell Westmount, Kitchener on Monday, November 18, 2019, in her 97th year. Beloved wife for over 62 years to the late Bertram G. “Bert” Thacker (2005). Dearly loved mother of Colin Thacker (Marlene) of North Bay, Lynn Bell (Jim) of Waterloo, Heather Hogan (Michael) of High River, AB, and Jill McDonald of Charleston, SC. Cherished grandmother of Jeremy Bell (Jen), Patrick Bell (Lisa), Meaghan Bell Gregory (Jamie), Ryan Hogan (Jennifer), Caitlin Freedman (Coogie), Graeme McDonald (Danielle), Alexandra Otwell (Scott), Lara McDonald, and the late Christopher Thacker. Loving great grandmother of Mackenzie, Connor, Avery, Evan, Zoey, Caden, Colton, Cerys, Cooper, Riley, and Greyson. Also fondly remembered by several nieces, nephews and their families. Margaret was the last surviving member of her own immediate family, having been predeceased by two sisters, Doris Carr and Edna Cakebread, and by a brother, George Brazier. Born in Wimbledon, England, June 11, 1923, she was the daughter of the late E. H. “Ernie” and Julia (née Welham) Brazier. During the Second World War, Margaret was a volunteer firefighter and ambulance attendant during the London Blitz. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, St. Thomas, having been formerly very active. Margaret was a charter member of the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Auxiliary, having been active for many years, a life member of the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario, a former member of Beta Sigma Phi Society, a former member of the St. Thomas Golf & Country Club where she was a Past President of the Ladies Division, and formerly volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels and the Canadian Cancer Society. Margaret was active in Rotary for many years, including the Rotary Music Festival, Travel and Adventure Series, and the annual Tour of Homes. For her service to Rotary, she received a Paul Harris Fellowship. In 1996, Margaret was presented with a Certificate of Achievement from the City of St. Thomas for her community service. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate Margaret’s life will be held at the combined Anglican parishes of Trinity & St. John’s, 20 Flora St., St. Thomas on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends will be received by the family from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Memorial donations to the Rotary Club of St. Thomas Foundation re: Rotary Music Festival, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society will be gratefully acknowledged.
