Henry (Harry) Hughes
Harry passed away peacefully on November 19, 2019, at the age of 81, at the Élizabeth Bruyère Hospital. Beloved husband of Susan for 52 years and loving father of Sarah (Peter Halpenny) and Joanna. He was a special grandfather to Trevor, Laura and Rowan Halpenny. Dear brother to John and the late Joan Douglas. Loved brother-in-law to Peter, Dinah (Bill), Johnny and Catherine (Jim), and treasured uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Harry was born and raised in East York, Toronto. He grew up with a strong work ethic. After graduating from the University of Toronto, he joined Atomic Energy of Canada.Throughout his long career in human resources management, he had a keen interest in improving employee relations and valued the strong relationships he built with everyone he worked with.
Upon retirement, Harry volunteered overseas with the Canadian Executive Service Organization. He also volunteered with the White Ribbon campaign to end violence against women, with close friends of the Riverdale Men’s Group, and participated with the Rotary Club of West Ottawa in fundraising through Music for Humanity.
Harry was a natural athlete, with a love of many sports, particularly marathon running and basketball. Harry also had a love of nature, and particularly enjoyed walking in the Gatineau Park and the Arboretum. He delighted in sharing his love of music at family celebrations. Harry will be remembered for his sense of humour and quick wit, generosity, and caring nature. His family will especially miss his gentle presence and love.
A memorial visitation will be held at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Rd. (at Roosevelt) on Sunday, December 1, 2019 from 1-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Colorectal Cancer Canada or the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre. Burial of ashes will take place in May 2020, at the Wakefield cemetery in the hills he so loved to explore. Condolences, tributes and donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com
