Obituary
Gerald Patrick Kennedy
March 13, 1941 – November 7, 2019
It is with overwhelming sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved Gerry at the age of 78.
He is predeceased by his Mom & Dad; Maude & Jackie, brothers Jackie & David; sisters; Marjorie, Anita & Joan.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 33 years Susie, daughter Connelle (Larry), grandchildren Jessica & Tyler, brother Lew (Helga), sister’s Marilyn (Jim) and Betty, niece’s Cheryl and Lisa and many close friends.
Gerry was born in Buchans, Newfoundland and as a kid he would make sandwiches and sell to the passengers traveling on the Newfoundland Bullet.
He worked on a mink ranch and proudly took care of the horses for the milk run, he was devastated when they replaced the horses with shiny white truck
Gerry joined the Navy in the 60’s. He traveled across Canada working a variety of jobs including: a deep sea fisherman up north, on the oil rigs in the Balfour Sea, oil fields in Alberta, on tow boats along the BC Coast, general laborer with Local 602. He held the seat with Local 602 and General Laborer’s union as the Secretary Treasurer. He remained in the Local as a First Aid Instructor, and eventually Gerry ended his working career as a Safety & Testing Specialist for 10 years.
Gerry retired early to pursue his passion as a horseman and spent many years riding and building lifelong friendships with the horse communities in Maple Ridge and throughout British Columbia.
Known as a generous and loving man, Gerry cherished the time spent with his family, and was lovingly known as «Poppy» to his two grandchildren, passing on his wealth of knowledge and experiences.
When not spending time with his family or at the ranch Gerry enjoyed spending his time bird watching as well as reading, with particular interest in the history of The American Civil War, British Columbia, and the Gold Rush.
Gerry was living his dream, until one tragic day in 2004, where he was out riding his horse and best friend, How-dy Silver King when they were both in a horrific accident on 132nd Ave in Maple Ridge.
Gerry not only lost his best friend, How-dy Silver King that day, but was faced with life changing injuries.
In memory of How-dy Silver King, the “How-d Trail” was opened in Maple Ridge in April 2007. To read the full article click on the Tribute Wall.
