B. Allen Bentley
1932-2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Burton Allen Bentley on November, 14, 2019. Born in Vancouver, BC, on
May 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Burton and Mildred (Allen)
Bentley.
Allen spent his early life in Grimsby, Ontario and moved to
Fredericton in 1965 where he began his career as a professor of
English Language and Literature at St. Thomas University where he
influenced the lives and learning of so many. He had a deep love of
his subject and wanted to share it. He was devoted to the fine arts,
loved music and visual art and he believed in preserving and promoting
these and the other cultural underpinnings of our community.
He had a tremendous love for nature woven with a
faith-filled fearlessness that led him and his family on great
adventures in travel and experience. He was a longtime volunteer with
the Fredericton Arts Alliance, and his generosity with his time and
his gifts will be remembered by all who knew him.
Allen will be greatly missed by his loving spouse, Jeanne
(Geldart) Bentley; sons, Daniel (Debbie), Adam (Ann) and Benjamin
(Stephanie); grandchildren, Rebecca, Kathleen, Elliot, Eric and
Lauren; sister, Elizabeth Heim; nieces and nephews, Patricia, Patrick
and Matt; beloved in-laws, Patsy, Steve and Jane Murray; as well as
cherished extended family members, friends and
students.
In addition to his parents, Allen was predeceased by his
first wife, Helen (Cleary) Bentley; infant daughter, Sarah Bentley; as
well as a brother, John Bentley.
The family would like to thank the paramedics and staff in
the Emergency Department at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for
their expert and compassionate care.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on
Monday, November 18, 2019 from 3 – 6 pm. A memorial mass
will be held from St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Tuesday,
November 19, 2019 at 12:05 pm with Fr. Bill Brennan as celebrant and
Fr. John Jennings as co-celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made to Allen Bentley Memorial Fund at St. Thomas
University or a charity of the donor’s choice.
