Obituary for
Ada ‘Mary’ Tessmer
Ada was born on October 22, 1930 to Agnes and Alfred Underhill. She was their fourth child and was delivered by midwife, Mary Moonie, at Megan, Saskatchewan She attended elementary school at Hillworth, Saskatchewan.
In the summer of 1946 Leland and Lellis Tessmer visited the Underhill homestead and Leland asked Ada to go to a fair with him, however, she declined. Later that fall Alfred hired Leland as part of a threshing crew. Leland and Ada became close friends and were married on May 18, 1948. In 1949 they began farming on their own homestead. They were blessed with seven children: Malcolm, Mark, Ivan, Darlene, Marlene, Kelvin, and Faye. In 1955 family life was interrupted when Leland and baby Ivan were hospitalized with tuberculosis for two years. Ada and the children moved to Somme where the family lived to 1963. That fall they returned to the farm.
Ada was an active member of the Souchez Ladies Club and the Somme Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing for herself, her family, and later, her grandchildren. She had a passion for quilting. She made quilts for family members and donated quilts to various organizations for fundraising. She also
enjoyed gardening–especially growing flowers. During the winter months there was always a puzzle on the table or a quilt in the frame. Her favourite time of the year was Christmas. She loved the holiday bling and having her family come home to large dinners.
Her parents, sister Helen, brother Fred, son Mark, husband Leland, and two grandchildren predeceased Ada. Ada is survived by her sister Margarite Edwards; sons Malcolm (Deborah), Ivan (Irene), Kelvin (Anna); daughters Darlene, Marlene (Ivan), Faye; twelve grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
