William “Frank” Harvey, at 91 years young passed away Saturday, October 12, 2019 in Truro. Frank lived there for over half of his life after growing up in Summerville, Nova Scotia, with his parents William Narraway and Clara May (Ogilvie) Harvey and his siblings Hilton and Carol.
While travelling with Acadian Lines from Hantsport to Truro, he met his wife of 68 years, Clara “Jackie” Gertrude Jackson. At the time Frank was working at Acadia Trust as a general accountant. Frank’s career grew into becoming the Program Manager at CKCL for 14 years. In 1977, he received an award from Atlantic Radio for his contributions to broadcasting. He then embraced his passion for travel by opening Frank Harvey Travel. In 1987, he received the award for Highest Growth. Frank retired, after 15 years in the travel industry and visiting many countries, to enjoy time with his family and friends.
Frank enjoyed being part of social groups and join many organizations where he flourished in making community improvements. Within many of these groups he held positions on their boards or played instrumental roles. Some of these accomplishments included being part of the group that was instrumental in the installation of the original lift at Wentworth Ski Hill; organized and became the first President of Brule Beach Estates Limited; during his time in the Kinsman he assisted in the original fundraising to build Victoria Park Pool. He coached Minor Hockey; he was a leader with Boy Scouts of Canada, was a member of various other organizations: Kinsman and K-40’s (Past-President), Golden K, Truro Curling Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was a proud member of the Progressive Conservative Party having worked on many campaigns over the years. Frank’s desire to see social communities thrive and people’s enjoyment of life was fulfilled through these organizations.
Frank lived a rich life with whom he considered to be his people. He was always most at home by the ocean. The time he spent at the “trailer” on the North Shore with his family and neighbours was always cheerful. He enjoyed any chance he got to spend time on the water either on a sailboat or his son’s zodiac. He especially enjoyed any activity with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. “Grampie was always there for a hug and a laugh anytime we needed”
Frank was loved and will be missed by his wife, Gertrude “Jackie”; son, Bruce (Brenda) Harvey; daughter Kim (Russell) Pierce; grandchildren, Amanda (Rob) Reid, Alex (Sheena) Harvey, Allen Pierce, Stephanie (Taylor) MacArthur, Alicia Pierce; great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Nicolas; sister Carol (Archie) Michaluk; sister-in-law Leslie Harvey and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Hilton Harvey.
Family will greet friends to share memories and stories from 1:00 – 3:00pm on Thursday, October 17th, 2019 at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro.
Interment will take place at a private family service. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Colchester East Hants Hospice Society.
