Duy Bao Quoc Nguyen (1990 – 2019)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Duy Nguyen, age 29, on October 21st, 2019, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His tragic, unexpected, and untimely death has devastated family and friends. Duy was very shy, but he had a big heart and kind soul. He was funny, honest, sensitive and thoughtful. He will be greatly missed by all.
Duy arrived in Canada with family as he turned 6 years old, from his birth place of Vietnam. He had just started to adjust to school in Vietnam, and was now moving into English-speaking classrooms in a foreign country. The shock of these changes was somewhat balanced with the wonder and excitement of some of the things this new land had to offer – everything here was so big and amazing. Relatively easy access to candy, ice cream and other treats beloved by most any child, were the things of dreams. In his younger years even a trip to Zellers invoked excitement at the prospect of exploring the endless bounty of treasures available.
However, real access to such treasures did not always come easily, and Duy’s parents worked very hard to support the family, which included Duy’s sister Phuong. With most of their extended family living back in Vietnam, they initially relied on each for support and comfort, and Duy and Phuong were very close. Duy made many friends here, and left a lasting impression on those who were lucky enough to get to know him.
Duy had many passions in life, and he was always exploring new things. He was a great fan of good food, of which traditional Vietnamese was one of his favorites – he loved his mother’s cooking, and always had room for another helping. Duy was an absolute gym rat who loved to work-out with weights, and running was also a key part of his regular routine. He put emphasis on healthy eating as well and enjoyed reading books to learn about things to improve his mind and body – he was always interested in and dedicated to self-improvement.
Unfortunately, Duy had suffered a very serious injury which greatly impacted his mobility. He went through several significant surgeries and a long period of rehabilitation. Although he was eventually able to walk on his own, he would never again regain full mobility, and his passion for running had come to an end. Despite these challenges, Duy maintained an optimism for the future, and was determined to find his place and happiness in the world. He dreamed of one day getting married, and having children and a home of his own, and to support them through hard work and loving kindness. He aspired to developing a profession and career of his own, where his talent and skills were best aligned, and never gave up working to make this a reality.
Those who knew Duy, including those he worked for, have commented on how respectful, considerate and helpful he was. He was always very thoughtful of others and generous, and would share what little money or things that he had. His childhood friends say he was a motivator, and encouraged them to be better and stronger people. Employers appreciated his work ethic and dedication to his job no matter what it entailed. He was known for his honesty and integrity, when working with money and in general. For example, he once bought three comic books at the market, realized later the seller gave him four, and walked back to the market to pay more money, to which the seller chuckled and gave him more books. Duy greatly enjoyed his comic books, and was also quite talented at drawing high quality comic style pictures of his own design.
Although his life was cut so very short, and so many dreams have been left unfulfilled, his memory will live on in his family and friends. We will miss you Duy.
Duy is survived by his mother Kim, father Hung, and sister Phuong. The family is grateful for all the individuals who met Duy on his path and treated him with kindness, respect and compassion. A memorial service will be held on Sunday October 27th at 2:30pm, at St. Patrick’s Church. Online condolences can be provided by visiting www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca
