MARY NOELLA (NOLA) WALTERS
(née PERRY)
Nola passed away peacefully at Lions Manor in Winnipeg on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at the age of 93.
Nola is survived by her children Harold Walters (Jane) and Bev Nyhof; and granddaughter, Michelle Finley (Darcy). She is also survived by her sisters Lil, Theresa, and Shirley, and brothers Elmer (Marie) and Junior (Diane) as well as by many nieces and nephews living across Canada.
Born in 1925 in Minto, NB, Nola was the middle child in a family of 13 children. She grew up in Summerside, PEI and was proud to call herself an “Islander” right up until her passing.
Nola left her extended family behind and moved to Manitoba in the late 1940’s and married Stan Walters, father to Harold and Bev. It wasn’t easy leaving her Maritime roots and family behind, but Nola overcame her homesickness and created a beautiful home on Truro Street in St. James. She was an avid fisherwoman and together with Stan and the kids, spent many weekends camping and fishing in Lake of the Woods.
Nola was the first waitress hired at the Silver Heights Restaurant in St. James and went on to serve at the Viscount Gort Hotel dining room for more than 25 years. She would frequently recall her favourite customer, Wayne Gretzky, who would stay at the hotel when playing at the old Winnipeg Arena. As a server, Nola always took pride in delivering the very best customer service and ensuring she was perfectly put together with her nails and hair done for every shift.
Nola was always eager to prepare a delicious meal for her family. Her turkey and roast beef dinners were second to none, and her clam chowder recipe is legendary.
In her retirement years, Nola took numerous trips across North America with her girlfriends. As the photos show, happy hour was popular as was shopping and stops at various casinos.
According to Nola’s wishes, there will be no service held in Winnipeg. A celebration of life will take place next summer in Summerside, PEI. Nola will be laid to rest near her parents and will finally be home on the Island.
The family would like to extend our deepest thanks to the staff of the 5th Floor at Lions Manor for their loving care of Nola over the past few years. We would also like to thank the palliative care team for their compassion and assistance in helping Nola remain comfortable.
Donations in memory of Nola can be made to a mental health charity of your choice.
