Grant’s Obituary
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Grant Lewis Wood on Monday, August 26th, 2019 at the age of 77. Grant was a twin son of the late Lewis and Margaret (Leonard) Wood of Kolbec, Cumberland County, NS and is survived by sister, Pat Braden, Halifax; twin brother, Gary (Greta) Wood, Kolbec; and sister, Donna (Jim) Fraser, Kolbec; and his three children, Crystal Wood, Calgary, AB; Gregory Wood, Agassiz, BC; and Sherry Larson, BC, and his 11 grandchildren. Grant is predeceased by son, Gary Grant Wood of Agassiz, BC in 2009. Grant’s love of adventure and travel led him to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in the mid-60’s where he raised his young family for nearly fifteen years. He tried many exciting things like driving ore trucks but his desire to help others led him to a career as a firefighter with the City of Whitehorse. Grant was a great storyteller and his unique sense of humour would often have people laughing long before the punch line. Grant evolved with the times through his passion for communications from citizen band radios to learning Morse Code and becoming a ham radio operator. He was an equestrian and loved horses so much that he once saved an old nag from starvation and they became best friends. Grant was a dog sled musher and was best known for using a Doberman Pinscher as a lead dog. He was a stock car driver with the brightest car on the track and everything Grant did he threw his whole heart into. Good fortune found Grant in the form of a lottery win in 1980 which led him back to his Nova Scotia family that he loved so much. Grant played guitar and sang to his favourite western and bluegrass classics. He was gentle, kind, generous, funny and a wonderful father and friend who will be greatly missed. Grant wished to forego a funeral service however there will be a private celebration of life for Grant at a later date. Arrangements in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home, Oxford.
