It is with teary eyes yet grateful hearts that we announce the passing of George William Stanley at Lindenview Nursing Home on Saturday August 31, 2019at the age of 81. Miracles happen everyday but our miracle was George who far surpassed the time he was given. His spirit and will to live was far stronger than his ailing body and our family is thankful for the time we had. George has been reunited with the love of his life, Dorothy, who he has missed deeply and spoke of tenderly for the last six years. Saying goodbye with heavy hearts are his children Kim Span (MacKenzie) and her husband Don and Kathy Cox. Left holding years of memories are his grandchildren, Tanya Shattler (MacKenzie) and her husband Colton, Krystina MacKenzie and her girlfriend Sharmaine, Kayla Richards, Ryan Span, Cody Span and his wife Ashley, and Landon Span and his fiancé Julie. George was blessed to be a Great-Papa to Ryland, Maysen, Olyvia and Natalie. A tender and special bond was shared with his great-grandson Cole, who made sure he was taken to Great-Papas house as often as he wanted to. George lived through many hearts breaks, losing many of those who were dear to him. Waiting to greet him on the next part of his journey are his parents, Harry Stanley and Dorothy Bowling, his sister Betty-Ann Emberson, his son Darrell Stanley who very recently made his journey before George, sons-in-law, Steve Cox and Jim MacKenzie and his beloved poodle, Duffy. George had a love-filled life, surrounded by those who adored him. He began his life in Hamilton and moved to Ancaster as well as Stoney Creek before beginning his new and final chapter with his blended family in Taber, Alberta. Those who knew George, knew he liked to be called Jorge (which is George in Spanish); George and Dorothy had travelled to Cuba and the Dominican Republic many times. George was known to be the neighborhood watch, whether it was unknown cars, folks parked in the wrong spot, construction or unknown people walking about, he let you know about it. George had many loves; golfing for many years, watching Coronation with his wife since the show first aired in the 1960’s, his vehicles in which he took incredible care of, airplanes, the Royal Canadian Legion, any news station, the Hamilton Tiger Cats and his hometown of Hamilton. He will be remembered as the strong and sturdy man who was the deep roots of our family tree with arms like branches to catch anyone of us in the hard times, a proud man to have served the military, a stubbornly picky eater, a man with an unusual aversion to drinking water but above all, a man with a heart of gold behind his firm and gruff exterior.
Visitation will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 20, 5205 48 Avenue, Taber, AB on Saturday September 7, 2019 from 2:00-3:00 P.M. Funeral Service will follow at 3:00 P.M. Cremation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 20, 5205 – 48 Avenue, Taber, AB, T1G 1S8, would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
