Trena Bernon

Sunday August 18th 2019
Bernon, Mary Doreen “Trena”
Another beautiful angel has entered the Kingdom of Heaven.
With profound sorrow and deepest grief, our family sadly announces the passing of Mary Doreen (Trena) Bernon, on Sunday, August 18, 2019, a wife so amazing and wonderful that mere words cannot describe her, surrounded by her devoted husband Dave and family by her side.
Trena leaves behind her husband of 58 years, her 2 sons, David (Katherine) and Derek (Rose), her beautiful grandchildren Brittany (Mike), Ashley (Ian), Julian (Katie) ,great grandchilden Kendell and Hunter and her step grandchildren Amanda, Kalie and Gillian, all of whom were the light of her life, also a number of nieces and nephews.
Trena was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, N.S., to the late Michael and Elizabeth MacNeil. She is also predeceased by her little sweetheart daughter, Elizabeth and her two loving sisters, Marguerite MacLean and Lorna Pettitt.
Being born in Cape Breton, she never lost her Down East charm, always approachable and friendly to everyone. She graduated from Mount Carmel High School and Central High School with Honours and was chosen as a Rotary Scholar and was sent to Ottawa as part of a cultural Exchange Program. She received a Student Council Leadership Award and a Scholarship to attend Nova Scotia Teachers’ College. It was here in Truro, N.S. that she met her husband, Dave, fell in love, got engaged, and married the very next year. After teaching in Sydney Mines for 5 years, Trena and her family moved to Guelph, where she and her husband were employed by the Wellington Catholic Separate School Board. She loved teaching and had a significant impact on the minds, hearts and souls of those entrusted to her care. She will always be remembered by her Grade 5 and 6 students for her daily reading of “The Black Stallion” Series which many of her students thoroughly enjoyed. She loved teaching music and was choir director as part of her many responsibilities. After teaching for 23 years, Trena became a Certified Travel Consultant, which enabled her to travel to many parts of the world, her favourite places being Israel and Italy. Her concern for others prompted her to become a Volunteer at the Guelph General Hospital for many years which brought her much satisfaction. She also campaigned for the Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation to name but a few. She received a special award from the Rotary Club of Guelph where she helped her husband, Dave, with Rotary Fundraising Activities and with Canada Day.
Trena loved animals and nature in general. Her warm and sensitive heart drew them to her.
She was also involved with St. John Church as a Eucharistic Minister, a Lector and a Counter and was a member and Secretary of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Italian Canadian Club.
In her later years, although Trena had many health problems, she rarely complained and placed her faith and trust in the hands of Almighty God.
Trena was also very creative and talented. She loved painting and crafts of all sorts.
She was the Matriarch of her family and, showed through example, how to live life in a caring, positive, and exemplary fashion. She will be missed by her friends, her friendship club, and her weekly card club with whom she shared many happy moments.
Although the clock of life for Trena has run its course, Eternity, with all its magic, splendor and wonder, now awaits her. Although the chain of life has been broken, it will be linked again with Dave, her family, and loved ones in Eternity. May God now reward her with Eternal Life and Peace.
Friends will be received at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon St., Guelph, on Thursday, August 22, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9.
