It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Roy Brian Anderson at the age of 78 on the evening of August 11, 2019 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre.
He will be forever remembered and missed by his wife of 54 years Florence (nee Sherrard), sons Brian (Jen), Brad (Mireille), Martin (Janet), and grandchildren Michael, Wade, Kori, Tyler, Linnea, Isla and Clare. Also in mourning are his sister Karen (Richard), brother Harvey and numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his infant sister, baby brother Harold, and parents Oscar and Martha (nee Dahlgren).
Roy lived his entire life in Minnitaki where he attended school before high school in Dryden. After graduating, he married Florence Sherrard in 1965 and worked in the Dryden mill’s steam plant before he and Florence quit their jobs and headed west to parts unknown. Roy was very adventurous, spontaneous, and confident so they only looked for more work when the money ran out. At that point he worked on several oil rigs around Calgary, before being hired in the steam plant when the Prince Albert mill started up. Missing home after two years, they moved back where Roy worked in the bush on the chainsaw and later the feller buncher until he retired at 65.
Roy was a dedicated husband and father who prioritized family time including Canada wide travel, boating, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed reading about history, wood-working including cedar-strip canoes and kayaks, playing guitar and singing (Roy was a big Johnny Cash fan). Another example of Roy’s adventurous spirit was when the decision to go to the east or west coast was made by vote at the end of the driveway. The most memorable trips included Newfoundland and Alaska road trips, during which the young family took canoes down Yukon’s Five Finger Rapids, and boating way out to the Slate Islands on Lake Superior. Prior to starting a family, Roy took Florence on several motorcycle trips out West.
A Private Family Service will be held at a later date.
If friends desire, donations may be made to CHAMP (Child Amputee Program) through the Stevens Funeral Homes at PO Box 412, Dryden, ON P8N 2Z1.
Special thanks to Princess Court, the Dryden Regional Hospital and Dr. Goulet for the excellent care Roy received.
