Obituary for
Herbert Laks
Passed away peacefully on August 23, at the age of 89 after a courageous fight with cancer. Beloved husband for 66 years of the late Lillian Laks z’l. Dear father of Joanna Abrams (Ira), Jeffrey (Linda) Laks, and James (Lysa) Laks. Much loved grandfather of Daniel (Evelyn), Jonathan (Zivi), Jessica (Scott), Stephanie (Will), Robert (Liz), Jordan, Bryan and Benjamin. Cherished great-grandfather of Miles, Jasper, Max and Lyla. Herbert was born in Vienna in 1930 but was fortunate to have escaped to England with the Kindertransport in December 1938. After the war, Herbert settled in Montreal where he graduated with an engineering degree from McGill University. He initially worked at RCA Victor before co-founding Pylon Electronics in 1955. He moved with his family to Ottawa in 1982 and continued to manage Pylon until his retirement in 1993. During retirement he was active in mentoring small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as enjoying his many travels around the world with Lillian and family. He especially enjoyed his many winters in Palm Springs, California. He will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and relatives. Special thanks to Elizabeth Cain (RPCT) and the staff at The Duke of Devonshire Retirement Residence for their dedication and compassion. Funeral Service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa, on Sunday, August 25, at 2 p.m. Interment at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Bank Street. Shiva is being observed at 11 Sundance Court, details to follow. Donations in Herbert’s memory may be made to the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation.
