Obituary for
David «Dave» Edward Paterson
June 14, 1937 – August 28, 2019
David Paterson, died at home Wednesday, August 28, after a short illness. Devoted husband to Sandra (Sandy) Paterson (Vezina); cherished father of Alyssa and Duncan; and, infinitely wonderful Poppa to Noa and Stella. Married to his “Babes” for 46 years, one month and one week, he wore his love, pride and devotion for his family as a Superman cape. Known as Dave to most, his loyalty to his family and friends he carried over to his favorite independent bookstores and breakfast joints. A gifted conversationalist, his sense of humour and ability to dead drop one-liners is something all that knew him will carry with them. An avid reader, war buff and history enthusiast, David bonded easily with those interested in the same. Though his network of acquaintances was innumerable, he kept a close circle of valued friends. By 82, David had lost several of his closest and longest term buddies, but was blessed in the deep friendships he gained upon joining The Old Farts car enthusiast club more than ten years ago. His love for “sporty cars” and racing was a huge part of life from his younger days around the track, to decades-long traditional yearly trips to his favorite races with friends (some of whom date back more than 50 years).
David travelled extensively during his careers as a respected analyst in various fields, and in retirement discovered the joys and adventure of sunny destinations and cruising with his tour director and partner in all, Sandy. It was during these voyages that he developed his magnetic appreciation for parrot shirts, of which he had many and wore proudly to the great thrill of his granddaughters.
David was a proud patriot, a legendary hockey dad to both his kids regardless of the hour, an epic host and he lived life to the fullest always. He faced more health issues than any one human should be asked to endure; he did it all with his usual stoic resolution and cheerful outlook. The world has lost a true gentleman. For those who knew him best, this world will never be the same, but he is with us still. We will keep him close to our hearts by honouring his favorite traditions of which there were many. In the moments you sit around a table with family, attend the best of parties in celebration of anything, as you raise a scotch or gin martini to your lips, as you enjoy adventurous foods or your favorite meals – he will be evermore present; never to be forgotten.
We wish to convey our great thanks to those who showed their support through these most challenging times, especially friends from The Old Farts and those in the condo building. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In place of flowers, donations in David’s honour can be made to Doctors Without Borders.
