Barbara Maria Lenk (née Skowronska) passed away on 13 August 2019 at the Belleville General Hospital at the age of 100. She was the daughter of Zygmund and Janina Skowronski and loving wife of Czesław Lenk. She is survived by two sons, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was born in Sambor Poland, two days before the end of World War I. She lived for over ten years in Warsaw where her father held the position of Deputy to the Chancellor of the Polish Republic until the outbreak of World War II. After being evacuated from Poland, the family eventually made their way to Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) via Bucharest, Istanbul, Cyprus and Palestine. Never one to sit around, she assisted in Nursing duties at a refugee camp and there met Czesław. After the war, they remained in Africa for a number of years, until moving to Scotland and eventually coming to Canada in 1952. The family settled in Belleville in 1966.
She will be remembered in Belleville for her long career of voluntary service with the IODE, on the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary (over 35 years) and at the Public Library, where she finally stopped working around the time she turned 100. She lived life to the fullest, kept active, was always there to support others with kindness and love and was rewarded with a long and healthy life.
According to her wishes, she has been cremated and a memorial service will be held in the Autumn at which time she will be interred next to her husband at the Belleville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to Médecins Sans Frontières.
