Owen’s Obituary
NICKERSON, Owen Mckay – 98, of Halifax, formerly of South Side, passed away on July 16, 2019 at the Camphill Veterans’ Memorial Hospital. Born September 28, 1920, in South Side, he was the son of the late Belmont Sr. and Susan (Ross) Nickerson. Owen was a veteran of WWII, joining the RCAF on August 6, 1941 where he served in Canada, Great Britain and Germany, until his discharge in 1946. After the war, he spent his working life on the water, retiring in 1975. His early years were on the boats «Judy Linda I, II and III» sword – or halibut fishing with Morrell Rodgerson («Bubbles»). He also fished on one of the Robertsons boats out of Shelburne. Last of all, he was on the «Stuart and Lynne» scalloping with his brother-in-law, Carl Atkinson. Later, he was engineer on Carl’s «Sea Life» herring seiners. In 1999 Owen and wife Hattie moved to Halifax were they were faithful members of the Bedford United Baptist Church. He took great pleasure in all forms of woodcraft, creating pieces that the family will always treasure. He was an avid bird and weather watcher and could have told you what the weather conditions had been like on any day or your choice in the last twenty years. He is survived by his wife, Hattie Ellen Nickerson; four sons, Neil (Adrian), Royden (Ethel), David (Lois) and Larry (Debbie); stepson, Peter (Pamela) Crowell; stepdaughter, Martha Crowell; foster brother, Cecil Atkinson; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Yola (Atkinson) Nickerson; and two brothers, Russell and Belmont Jr. There will be a visitation held Saturday, 7-9 p.m., at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. The funeral service will take place, Sunday, July 21, 2 p.m. at the South Side United Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the White Lily Cemetery. We, the family, would like to thank the staff of 4East of the Camphill Veterans’ Memorial Hospital for the care and compassion received over the last few months.
