Memorial Donation
After a long life of 96 years, and 68 years as a priest, Monsignor Roderick T. White died peacefully at the Long Term Care facility in Corner Brook on July 12. 2019.-Monsignor will be sadly missed by Archbishop Peter Hundt, his fellow priests, Sisters, parishioners, relatives and friends along with the staff of the Long Term Care facility in Corner Brook and Bay St. George, in Stephenville Crossing.
M0nsignor was ordained a priest for the Diocese of St. George’s in his home parish of St. Joseph’s in St. George’s by Bishop Michael O’Reilly on April 8, 1951. He served in many parishes throughout the diocese, including the Most Holy Redeemer and Immaculate Conception Parish Corner Brook, St. Ann’s Parish Searston, Our Lady of Fatima Parish Piccadilly, Assumption Parish Stephenville Crossing, and St. Columcille Parish St. Fintan’s. He retired from active ministry in 1994.
Monsignor served on the Board of Consultors for the Diocese, the Association of Roman Catholic School Boards, and represented Western Newfoundland on the board of Directors of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s. Upon the resignation of Bishop McGrath in 1985, Monsignor served as Administrator of the Diocese of St. George’s and served as Vicar General from 1986-1990. He was appointed Prelate of Honour, with the title of Monsignor, in 1978 by Pope John Paul 1.
Monsignor White had two great passions – music and history, especially the history of the Diocese of St. George’s as it was known then. He would take his recorder and visit the elderly people that he knew had valued information on the earlier days of the Church. On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Diocese of St. George’s in 2004, the diocese published “Pioneer Days and Pioneer People in the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. George’s, NL” written by Monsignor White
Monsignor had a good bass voice and each time Bishop Hundt visited him Monsignor would invite him to join him in singing the Latin hymn Salve Regina. The priests would also remember him playing lively tunes on the piano at various gatherings
Visitation will take place at St. Joseph’s Church, St.. George’s on Monday from 2:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. The Vigil liturgy will take place at 8:00 p.m.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church in St. George’s on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. The principal celebrant at the Mass will be Archbishop Peter Hundt. Cremation will take place following the Mass with interment in the family plot in the parish cemetery on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
