It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and amazing friend, Emerson Jessome, 78, who passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bras d’Or on September 29, 1940, he was the son of the late Elias and Ester Jessome.
Emerson was the first Vice Charter Member the Bras d’Or Florence and area Kinsmen. He was a business manager of Local 1588 Carpenters. His first job was on the Great Lakes at age 16. He was a board member of the Bras d’Or Co-op.
Emerson had his own business; Bras d’Or Win-Dor Jessome’s Contracting and Supplies. He was a member and president of the Bras d’Or Senior’s and Pensioners Club for 5 years. Emerson was also the president of the Cape Breton Council of Senior’s and Pensioners for 5 years as well. He was on the Board of Directors of Community Links for 6 years. Emerson was a hockey player with the Bras d’Or Lakers, a ball played with the Bras d’Or Combines, amateur boxer, and very active in Matt Talbot Retreats.
Emerson believed that volunteering is good for the community. “All the Senior’s Clubs run on volunteers. If there were no volunteers, there would be no clubs. Without them, there would be a lot of isolated seniors.” “There will always be people who give and people who take. From what I’ve seen in my life, the people who give are always so much happier than the people who take.” Emerson was a happy man.
Emerson is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 57 years, Lenora, daughters Ona (Frank), Norie (Donnie), Adean (Brad), and Rachael (Alex), sons Emmie (Sandra), and Elias. Also left to mourn are his brothers Wilfred (Georgina), and Danny (Chris), sisters Ester (Duke), Janice, Denise (Wayne), and Ella (Auley), grandchildren Kayla (Ash), Gary (Katie),Jillian, Dylan, Erika and Mila, and great-grandchildren Parker and Ivy, many nieces and nephews, and so many friends, especially his very best friends, Dennis Jessome and Charlie Reardon.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Robs and Elias, brother-in-law Jackie, sister-in-law Beverly, and grandson John Edward.
The family would like to thank Palliative Care, VON, nurses and doctors, friends who visited, too many to mention. A very special thank you to daughter Adean, who took care of him at home, and granddaughter Erika, his special nurse.
At Emerson’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Emerson’s life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at 10:30 am in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Emerson’s memory may be made to An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, or St. Joseph Church Fund.
