Werner was born in northwest Germany and raised on a small farm. He immigrated to Canada in 1954, working first in the mines of Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba, before eventually settling in Winnipeg. It was there that he received his journeyman ticket on the way to his lifelong vocation as a commercial carpenter, working almost exclusively with PCL Construction. He married Meta Maretzki in 1963. They lived in Winnipeg until 2013, when they moved to Edmonton to be near their children and their families.
Once he retired, Werner used his trade skills to intentionally design and build a family cottage in the Beaconia area. His vocation became his hobby. Being at the cottage became a form of both relaxation and invigoration. He took pride in his work. It was a great source of joy.
But Werner’s greatest joy was neither his earthly family, nor his earthly attainments. By God’s grace, Werner was a Christian. As such, he is now with Jesus, the One who died for his sins, as he repented and placed his trust in His perfect and sin-bearing life. He is now enjoying eternal life and his heavenly reward in the presence of his Lord and Savior.
Werner and Meta raised their family to value and love the church. He was a member of Mission Baptist Church in Winnipeg and very much arranged his activities around church life. When they moved to Edmonton, they enjoyed the fellowship of their new spiritual community at McKernan Baptist Church.
Once the cottage was sold and he was more limited physically, Werner dove headlong into his devotional life. He would read His Bible daily, sing often by systematically working through his hymnbook and pray for many. He also supplemented that with a daily dose of Christian radio. In conversations, he would eagerly share his faith with others.
The family is thankful to the staff at Wedman House and Shepherd’s Care (Millwoods) for their care over the past two years as well as the pastoral care staff and individuals from McKernan that took time to visit dad.
Werner will be missed. But he leaves, for his family and friends, many cherished memories.
Till we meet again…
