George MacGillivary 19302018

George MacGillivary
1930-2018
MacGILLIVARY,
George
Nathaniel
With his loving wife by his side, George MacGillivary passed
away peacefully on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Cape Breton
Regional Hospital. Born on November 11, 1930 in Florence, he was the
son of the late Neil and Ellen (MacLean) MacGillivary.
George was the last surviving member of his
family.
He was predeceased by an infant son; his brothers, Ralph,
Archie, Neil, Wilfred and Donald; his two sisters, Kathleen and Helen,
and in-laws, Harvey and Agnes Bonnell.
George began a distinguished military career in 1949 where he
was a member of the Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment and in 1951 he served
in the Korean war. After his tour in Korea, he stayed with the regular
forces until his release in 1959. He then re-joined the militia and
was the Commanding Officer of the Special Militia Training Centres in
Cape Breton and also served as Aid to the Lt. Governor Plow of NS.
Over the next 20 years, George held a number of Military positions
throughout Canada and two tours in Lahr, Germany. George retired in
1983 after 34 years of Canadian Military Service retiring with the
rank of Major.
After his retirement George and Anna moved to Westmount.
George had many hobbies including fishing and yard sales. He
especially enjoyed collecting and repairing clocks and was often
referred to as «Clock Man». He often repaired clocks for
people at no charge, just for the joy of helping them. George was a
former member of Wilson united Church in Florence, and Westmount
United.
George is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Anna
(Bonnell) MacGillivary and his two sons, Bruce (Penny), Surrey, BC and
Derek (Nicoletta), Ottawa. George will be missed by his extended
MacGillivary and Bonnell families and his many nieces and nephews,
whom he loved dearly.
The family wish to express thanks to Dr. James MacKillop and
the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional
Hospital, as well as the staff of the CCU in the QE 2. Memorial
donations can be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital foundation,
and Diabetes or Parkinsons Associations.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Haven Memorial
Gardens on Friday, June 7 at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Thomas Whent
officiating.
