George Allister Fraser Wednesday April 3rd 2019

Fraser, George Allister – 87, Upper Onslow, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2019 surrounded by love and family. George was born on February 15, 1932 in New Glasgow, N.S. to the late John and Ruth (Munro) Fraser. He grew up in Little Harbour, Pictou County and received his early education in the Little Harbour School later graduating from the Vocational School in North Sydney.
Through the years, George was employed at the Trenton Car Works, Monarch Mineral Springs (Coca-Cola Bottling), Fireco Sales and was a commercial traveler in the food and restaurant industry. Ever the consummate salesman, George traveled throughout the Atlantic Provinces and made many friends on his travels. Over the years, he and his family lived in New Glasgow, Kentville, Stephenville, NF and, since 1969, in Truro. In later years, George served for a decade on the Nova Scotia Film Classification Board. George was a Charter Member of the New Glasgow Junior Chamber of Commerce and a long-time member of the United Commercial Travelers Association. He was also a member of the Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia and, in 2002, was presented with the “Volunteer of the Year Award” in recognition of his long service. An avid sports fan, George was especially devoted to the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs, whom he had hoped to see win the Stanley Cup one more time, but has now passed this mission onto his grandchildren. George enjoyed the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous for 34 years and was a mentor and support to many. Known for his quick sense of humour, he also had a kind heart and would always go that “extra mile” for others. He believed in giving back to the community in quiet ways. George’s big heart and sense of compassion for others were legendary and he always had a soft spot for the underdog, be it in sports or in life. He and his wife, Joan, were always generous, opening their home and hearts to many. While spending many years wintering in Naples, Florida, George enjoyed making new friends and developed long term relationships that were life-giving through the years. George leaves his soul mate and loving wife of 64 years, Joan (Lipton); daughters, Joanne (David McFaul) Naples, Fl., and Lynn (Tomasz Hruczkowski), Edmonton; son, David, Halifax; grandchildren, Hanna Hruczkowski, Charlette Fraser, Danyll and Adrian Brown; step-grandchildren, Kuba Hruczkowski, Scott and Kitara Brown and his sister, Margaret Johnson, Thorburn. He was predeceased by his son Donald “Newf”; sisters, Helen (Walters) and Isabelle (Laister) and brothers, Donald, Marshall and Edwin. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and countless friends. George always said that he was blessed with the best neighbours while growing up in Little Harbour – the Aiken and Colquhoun families, and he found that same sense of community in later years. Joan and her family wish to thank the wonderful professionals who supported and cared for George over the short duration of his illness including Dr. Neil Bower, the Colchester Palliative Care Team, especially Drs. Dave Henderson and Gerry Farrell, Angela McDonnell and Cheryl Stevens and the VON support team. If you were to ask, George would have told you that he lived a simple and happy life, and that his greatest achievement and source of pride was his family: his wife, children and grandchildren, who always knew how much they were loved. George’s family always said, “You could take the boy out of Little Harbour, but never take the Harbour out of the boy”. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 8th from 6:00-8:00pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with a celebration of George’s life on Tuesday, April 9th at 2:00pm in the Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince Street, Truro.
