Bernadette Dicks Hoadley RN January 23 1934 to June 6 2019

On May 22, 2019 Bernadette suffered a stroke and was admitted to the Heath Science Centre. During that time members of her family stood vigil with her. On June 6 Bernadette left this world for a far better place, safe in the arms of Our Lord.
This would be the end of her time on this earth but not before she travelled an amazing journey while she was here.
Bernadette was born and spent her early childhood at Tides Point on the Burin Peninsula where her father was the lighthouse keeper. When the Dicks family moved to St. John’s, Bernadette chose a career as a health-care professional. She enrolled at the St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with her RN at the top of her class in 1956. Her excellence in nursing school was the foundation for what would become a career marked with efficiency and dedication. All her life Bernadette was so proud to be a St. Clare’s grad trained by the Sisters of Mercy.
Upon graduation Bernadette became a public health nurse. This career choice enabled to experience cottage hospital nursing in several area of the province. It also afforded her the opportunity to administer nursing care to coastal community aboard the Easter Seals vessel.
After moving to Ottawa in 1962 she worked at the National Defense Medical Centre and at the Ottawa Civic. For the last years of her career, she did private duty nursing until she retired to return to St John’s in 2006.
Bernadette’s trip to her eternal reward will be welcomed by family who preceded her – a cherished and loving daughter to John and Madeline Dicks (parents), Michael and Joseph (brothers), Leon (nephew). While her earthly journey has ended, she has left many to value her memory and the mark she made.
Most especially – sons Scott and grandson Nicholas (Alberta), Mark (British Columbia) – sisters Irene Pearcey, Marguerite Hammond, Mary Power, Ada Casey – brothers Dominic and John (Jack). Very special thanks to her niece Brenda Pearcey-Cardwell for her dedication and commitment to Bernadette’s final wishes.
The staff and residents of Tiffany Village Retirement, where she resided, will sadly miss Bernadette.
Cremation has taken place and at Bernadette’s request there will no visitation. Service to be held 9:30 A.M. June 10 2019 at The Carnell Memorial Chapel. No flowers by request.
