Alan Ross Bates
May 20, 1960 – June 19, 2019
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our brother Alan at Northumberland Hills Hospital, aged 59. Predeceased by his parents, Ronald and Jean Bates and younger brother Jimmy, Alan is survived by his siblings Jeffery, Kevin (Lydia Marciano), Barbara (James) Turcott and Lisa. Much loved Uncle Alan to Amber (Paul) Norman, Sean (Tania) Kawakami, Kristen (Peter Reid), predeceased by Jillian, Katelyn (Jamie Boylan), Ryan, Megan (Aaron Avelar) Turcott and Dharma-Jean Hewton. Great uncle to Mason, Carson, Ciara, Payton and two more on the way.
Alan always had somewhere to go or something to do. Listening to music or playing his guitar, jamming with friends, being a long suffering Leafs fan, or traveling across Canada and the US are just some of the fragments of his life. A younger Alan collected concert ticket stubs, albums on vinyl and played hockey. Alan graduated from George Brown College with a diploma in Tool and Die Design and worked locally as a draftsman over the last number of years.
Alan’s greatest blessing and his most prized possession are the friendships he formed while living in Grafton and Cobourg; life long friends who became his other family. These friendships are what made Alan richer beyond imagination.
Alan spent that last several months in the care of the palliative team at NHH. This incredible team of nurses, along with Dr Mulé, provided kind, thoughtful and compassionate care. We cannot thank them enough for their support. Alan was always in very good hands from the day he arrived.
A lot of Alan’s life centered around music, and in the last months the radio was a constant companion. “To reminisce with my old friends, a chance to share some memories, and play our songs again.” Ricky Nelson.
Alan left us while the radio played.
Visitation to be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Monday, June 24th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church in Grafton on Tuesday, June 25th at 1 pm with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to either the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research at Sunnybrook Hospital or the Palliative Ward at Northumberland Hills Hospital are appreciated.
