Agnes’ Obituary
Atkinson, Agnes G. – 96, passed away peacefully at Bay Side Home in Barrington, Nova Scotia, on June 2, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Leah (Smith) Blades of Clark’s Harbour. Before marriage, Agnes traveled to Ontario where she worked in a factory during World War II, putting armatures on generators. During her married years, Agnes kept a small country store in Clark’s Harbour for a number of years and also worked for the family firm packing salt fish. After her husband died, she spent several years caring for her elderly parents, after which she moved to Newellton, and lived with her son and family for 24 years. She remained quite active up into her 80’s, even mowing the lawn and carrying in wood. For years, she enjoyed bowling, New Horizon’s Senior’s Club, bingo, doing puzzles, watching TV, reading and playing cards. Her last five years were spent at Bay Side Home where she enjoyed good health up until several weeks ago. She was so happy with her surroundings and staff at Bay Side that when the time came for the annual family meeting with staff, she refused to attend. She claimed it was a waste of her time. She had no complaints. We, the family, will be forever grateful for the care of our mother and grandmother received during her last years. Agnes is survived by her son, Martin, and his wife Donna, grandchildren, Gary Ferguson, currently of B.C., Mary Linda (Barry) Clairmont, four great-grandchildren, E. Parrish, Brianna Ferguson, Sebastien Clairmont, Peyton Clairmont and two great-great-grandchildren, Wiley and Floyd Ferguson, brother, Frederick Blades (Helen), sister, Nancy Nickerson (Andrew), plus a host of nieces and nephews. Agnes was predeceased by her husband Charles, her parents, brothers, Ernest and Donald Blades and sisters Norma Swimm and Phyllis Cunningham and more recently great-granddaughter Cameron Clairmont. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 5 from 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held on June 6 at 2:00 pm from the H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, Reverend Vincent Robertson Officiating. Interment will follow at Oakvale Cemetery in Clark’s Harbour. Family flowers only. Memorial donations in her name may be made to charity of choice.
