MURDOCH, James Robert “Bob”
November 30, 1938 — January 5, 2019
James Robert “Bob” Murdoch, husband, father, brother, friend, engineer/manager and private pilot passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019 after a lengthy battle with kidney disease, congestive heart failure and lung cancer.
He is survived by his two daughters, Brenda (Mike) and Shelley. He is also survived by brother Allan (Kathy), sisters Doreen, Wendy and Debbie (Michael) and his sister-in-law, Patricia. He was predeceased by his wife Joanne, mother and father Doris and Len Murdoch, sister Enola Howe, his parents-in-law Edward and Hannah (Annie) Braun, stepmother-in-law Ida Braun, and brother-in-law George Starheim. He will be missed by his many friends at the Army & Navy Club and his grand-puppies, Max, Krystal and Gaby.
Bob will be remembered for his great work ethic and desire to provide for his family. He was incredibly smart and stubborn. He was talented musically, singing and playing the violin and piano. He participated in numerous sports including downhill skiing at Red Mountain, rugby, lacrosse, tennis, golf and curling. He enjoyed playing bridge and games with family and friends. He was also a life-long avid reader. Bob worked many different jobs and roles throughout his career including working in Trail’s Cominco smelter, cooking for a hunting camp as well as serving as a lieutenant in the engineer corp. Bob attended UBC and graduated as a civil engineer and began to work for Imperial Oil in a managerial role. He married Joanne Braun on Sept. 13, 1963, had two daughters, Brenda and Shelley in BC before the family was transferred to Toronto due to his work. After 10 years back east, the family was transferred to Calgary in 1979 and Bob ended up retiring from Esso in Edmonton at the age of 53 and the couple moved to Kelowna to enjoy their golden years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. Dad sacrificed his own health to support Mom through her battle with cancer and was dedicated and supportive until she passed in 2017. Their bond was so strong.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Rd, Kelowna, BC. Special thanks to the Central Okanagan Hospice House-North and Dr. Appleby for the wonderful care Bob received and to Al, Kathy, Pat, Mike and Chris for all their support during this difficult time.
