SAMSON, Herman Joseph
Herman Joseph Samson, 76, of Louisdale, died on the morning of Saturday, May 4, 2019 of a sudden illness.
He was the son of Felix Samson Jr. and Lillian Burke Samson.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Mary; his children, Phillip (Colleen), Dion (Donna) and Tracey (Mark); his grandchildren, Daniel, Katelyn, Erin and Jamie; special daughter-in-law, Margaret; and many loving friends and family members. He is survived by nieces and nephews and his remaining siblings, Carl (Joan), Roy (Eleanor), Patsy (Venere), Joan (Stanley), and Estelle.
One of ten siblings, Herman was pre-deceased by his parents and his siblings, Vincent, Teddy, Sylvia and Ellen Jane.
Herman was born and spent his entire life in Louisdale, Cape Breton. He was a hard-working
rods-man in the Iron Workers union for over forty years. He worked most notably on the
Confederation Bridge connecting P.E.I. to the rest of Canada, but even on smaller jobs, was
always dedicated and able in his work. He was a loving husband, a caring father, and a proud
grandfather, and the love he gave to his family was only matched by the love they felt towards
him. He was a man of integrity and simplicity who did for others without asking for praise or
thanks, and though often presenting a face of strength and stoicism, was a man who felt deeply,
cared strongly and loved with his whole heart. It is perhaps the smallest things that will be
missed the most. People always knew when Herman was close because he was always singing or
humming – sometimes a song he knew, sometimes a song he made up. He was always in a good
mood and let everyone know by sharing the happy songs that played in his mind.
Herman’s passion and hobby was fishing, and though his fishing spots were his best-kept secret,
he always shared his catches with family and friends. He would spend hours fishing through a
hole in the ice and then bring his catch home and cook it for his family – doing what he loved to
feed those he loved. He was a storyteller and could always make others laugh with his anecdotes
of growing up and living in rural Nova Scotia. He was compassionate towards animals of all
kinds, and will be sorely missed by his companion dog, Oscar.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 10 from 6-9 p.m. in the Glen Sampson Room, Louisdale
