George Wesley Estabrooks passed away peacefully on 28 May, 2019 at the age of 97, with family at his side.
Son of the late Mace and Evelyn Estabrooks of Sackville New Brunswick, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years Barbara (Fletcher), daughter Linda (Mitchell), brothers Harley and Ansel, and sisters Edith (Hicks), Gloria (Cole) and Betty (Patterson)
Loving father of Sherry McAlpine and special father-in-law to Rod McAlpine and Dave Mitchell. Proudest grandfather of Kimberly Mitchell, Kelly McAlpine and Jeff Mitchell as well as amazing great grandfather to Noah, Nicole, Julia and Alexandra. He was admired and will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. George was a survivor. During World War 2, he spent 4 years overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. On June 6, 1944, he landed on Juno Beach, pushing through with his regiment all the way into Holland where they were a big part of the Dutch Liberation. He was shot twice and survived severe injuries suffered as a passenger on a train that was bombed. All three times, he returned to his regiment to continue the fight. After the war, he married Barbara and remustered into the RCAF where he served in St. Hubert, London, North Bay, Marville, France and Trenton where he retired from the military in 1972.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday June 1st at Woods Park in the chapel downstairs. Visitation with family is from 1:30, followed by a service at 3pm.
Interment will take place at a later date in Midgic, New Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Poppy Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Woods Park for their loving care of George over the last 2 years.
