George Fecyk
June 3, 1925 – May 11, 2019
With sadness we announce the passing of our father on May 11, 2019 in his 93rd year at the Nelson Jubilee Manor.
George was born in Wakaw, Saskatchewan to proud parents William and Irene Fecyk. He grew up with 8 siblings 3 brothers and 5 sisters on a Saskatchewan farm during the Depression. He was extremely proud of his parents whose generosity and kindness gave food to feed the unemployed while still providing for their family during this difficult time. He left the family farm to find work throughout various parts of British Columbia including Vancouver and eventually arriving in the early fifties in Nelson. This is where he met Mary Anne Schesnuk who became his wife and where they raised their two sons. George was able to secure employment primarily at the Reeves MacDonald mine (Remac), a mining camp near the intersection of the Pend d’Oreille and Salmo Rivers. He held various positions at the mine until its closure in 1971. A small man in stature he always told us how he exceeded his production quotas and regretted when he moved into a supervisor role. After that he worked for several smaller exploration companies. However, his greatest accomplishment occurred after his work career ended. He had a dream to build a home and loved to work on his property cutting wood and landscaping. He spent countless hours in the woods and never wanted to leave. He enjoyed all the animals encountered in the forest. He was accompanied often by two German shepherds, Amos and Samson who brought him great companionship. The time spent outside extended his life well beyond what was expected. People admired all the effort and work he put in. Although he never built his dream home, he did move his trailer to the site and enjoyed over twenty-five years of a specular view of Nelson. He loved to sit outside at night to watch a bright star (Capella) twinkling with red and green flashes that starts low in the northeastern sky and tracts across the night sky. When not enjoying the outdoors, he spent his time studying the bible confirming his deep commitment to the Jehovah Witnesses faith. The last five years his physical and mental health degenerated. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Mountain Lakes, Talarico Place and Nelson Jubilee Manor. Many went above the call of duty in caring for him in his final years.
George is survived by his two sons Robert and James, numerous nephews, nieces, and in-laws. George was predeceased by his parents, his wife Mary, his sisters Ruth, Jean, Mary, Eunice and Anne, his brothers John. Mickey and Ernest.
Per Dad’s request no service will be held. A visitation will be held at Thompson Funeral Service Friday May 17 at 2:00 pm.
