Marianne’s Obituary
Marianne beloved wife of David Hill, passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the age of 84 years.
My mama was born in Rheine in Westfalen, Germany. She came over to Canada, by ship, when my sister was only five years old. My parents lived a short time in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where I was born. We moved to Calgary when I was a toddler and my mama lived there the rest of her life.
My mama was always industrious and hard working. Her passion was hairdressing and she owned and operated two beauty salons. I remember having all the latest hair styles growing up. Pixie cuts, bobs, highlights, permanents, even one time an afro. I remember seeing myself in the mirror for that one and we both laughed for about fifteen minutes.
She loved decorating and making things beautiful. She always decorated the houses we lived in herself. She had a talent for this and they always felt like home.
She always loved the holidays as well and decorated the house up for them. She went all out, Easter trees, etc for Easter, but I think Christmas was her favorite.
At Christmas she would always buy the tree only days before the 24th. On Christmas Eve my sister and I would go up to our rooms and get ourselves ready. We would have to wait up there while mama would get everything ready herself. When she was done my mama would ring a bell and my sister and I would come down the stairs, and wonder of wonders, it would be Christmas. The tree was trimmed with tons of presents under it; the house was decorated; and my favorite tradition, Christmas plates filled with delicious goodies. There was even a wonderful snow village and a delicious meal cooked. Although I decided to let my children help with the decorating and tree trimming I will never forgot the impact it had on me of coming down those stairs and it was magically Christmas.
Mama certainly had a love for making things and people beautiful. For my wedding she sewed my dress herself and did my hair. I was a gorgeous bride because of her. I took a modeling course when I was 18 and when I went for my photo shoot she came with me and did my hair. My own personal hairdresser; I felt special! She did such a great job that my photographer told that she had my pictures laid out on a table when a fellow who owned a salon in the same building came in and thought that I was different girls when he looked at them.
My mama also loved to ski and did it as often as she could. I remember hitting the slopes with her at hills like Lake Louise and Sunshine.
I am grateful for the German traditions that she handed down to me. German was my first language. I remember we all put pennies in a jar whenever we said an English word. Of course I had to put in the most, but guess who gave me the pennies, that’s right, my wonderful mama. My parents were also members of the German Club and my sister and I were enrolled at the Shangrala German School in Calgary.
What I remember most about my mama though is that she was always singing. She loved her German songs and taught them all to me. We had a stereo with a reel to reel tape where all her favorite music was recorded and Sunday was her favorite day of the week to listen to them. Of course she had her favorite English songs as well and she had a beautiful voice.
My lovely wonderful mama I will miss you dearly.
Ich hab dich Lieb.
