Stuart John Campbell died peacefully in his sleep at 3:40 am on February 1st, 2019 at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife Ann (nee Green), sons Andrew (Amanda) and Duncan (Laura) and grandchildren Kevin, Patrick, Charlie, Jorden, Adam and Taylor.
Stuart was born on May 27th, 1937 in Bury, Lancashire to George and Ellen (nee Hartley) Campbell. He was the youngest of three boys and was pre-deceased by Colin and Ian. He grew up in the village of Shuttleworth, a place he loved throughout his life.
After leaving grammar school Stuart began an apprenticeship as an electrician. His apprenticeship was interrupted by National Service and Stuart joined the Royal Air Force, serving for four years with three of them in Germany. While in Germany he discovered he was a much better football player than he’d ever realized. Others discovered it too, and soon Stuart was asked to play for the British Armed Forces team against European national teams.
Shortly after returning, he met Ann Green at a dance hall in Bury and asked her to dance. Before long, the two were married and building a life together in Burnley.
Stuart was a young man when Burnley Football Club were the dominant team in English football. He quickly became a Burnley supporter and remained a lifelong Claret. His passion for football was something that remained constant throughout and he was always happy to talk about who was winning and whether Burnley would ever be any good again.
Stuart used his Air Force training as a springboard to bigger things and was soon working as an Electrical Engineer for Lucas Aerospace and then as a Senior Manager for Tenneco-Walker, both in Burnley. In 1975 Stuart accepted a position as an Electrical Engineer with Cryovac in Mississauga and he and his family immigrated to Canada, settling in Oakville. Stuart worked 23 years for Cryovac, holding positions in Engineering, as Radiation Officer, and in Management.
Soon after arriving in Canada, Stuart volunteered as a coach with The Oakville Soccer Club and before long, he was coaching Oakville “Rep” teams to tournament victories, Ontario Championships and success at Canadian Championships. Many players he coached went onto professional careers and represented Canada internationally.
Stuart loved running and was often seen pounding the pavement in the early morning around East Oakville in all kinds of weather. It was something he did daily, and he continued to run well into his early 70s, when most sensible people had already put away their running shoes.
Stuart was someone who rarely complained, always more concerned about the others around him. Known as an early riser, with a strong work ethic and always with the goal to make life better for his family.
Stuart spent his later years travelling with Ann and supporting his active grandchildren in their many endeavours. More than anything, Stuart loved his family, and he was never happier than when he was spending time with them. He adored his grandchildren and lit up whenever he was around them. And they returned that love and took every opportunity to connect with him.
It’s this that his family will miss most of all about him. The way he had a twinkle in his eye, a cheeky smile on his face, a corny joke and how he could so quickly get everyone laughing.
He loved well and was well loved.
In accordance with Stuart’s wishes, a small private funeral was held at Kopriva-Taylor Community Funeral Home in Oakville on February 6, 2019.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to The Oakville Hospital Foundation in Stuart’s name.
