With much sorrow we announce the death of our mother Mary Patience Cooper on Tuesday February 5, 2019 at the age of 84. Predeceased by her dear husband Paul Duncan Cooper (2004). Mourned by their five children – Sarah (Alejandro Godoy), Jane, Robert (Marie-Louise), Michael (Alex Lucario) and Julia (Paul Muto) and her eight grandchildren – Sophia (Kyle), Margaret (Matt), Genevieve, Rita (Gabriel), Sascha, Neil (Laura), Maya and Alec, and her four great-grandchildren – Arlo, Aurelia, Henry and Verity. Beloved by her two sisters Margaret Faith (Bill) and Virginia Grace (George), and her childhood friend and sister-in-law Clare Cooper Marcus. Missed by all her friends and extended family around the world. Our mother was born in Ipswich, England and came to Canada in 1957 to marry our father. She worked as a housewife for many years as they raised their children on a farm in rural Metcalfe. Later, she had a successful career in municipal politics, serving as an elected councillor in the former Township of Osgoode for 12 years. During her time on Council, she was a strong advocate for social housing in our rural community. She served for years on the committees for the building of the Osgoode Care Centre, the senior citizen apartment buildings in Metcalfe and Osgoode, and the social housing units in three rural villages. Passionate about reading, she also worked to support our local village libraries. Her love of trees and landscaping were reflected in her interest in parks and her work for the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. We, her family, continue to share her love of trees and books and community service. We shall miss her guidance on all these matters. We wish to thank the staff at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre – Gatineau 1 South – for the loving care and professional support that they offer daily to all their residents. Thank you also to all our friends and family for the many kindnesses shown to our mother over the past years. In memoriam: Plant a tree and read a book. Private memorial for the family to be held at a later date.
