OBITUARY
Zoltan Alexander Witt
January 30, 1932 – December 31, 2018
It is with deep sadness that the family of Zoltan Witt announces his passing on December 31, 2018 at the age of 86 years in Calgary, AB. Zoltan is survived by his two sons Peter (Jenny-Lyn Keene) and Ronald, and five grandchildren: Ryan, Kiel, Matthew, Simon, and Kaeleah. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Martha (Benke), his parents Lajos Witt and Franciska (Aschauer), and his brother Louis.
Zoltan studied survey engineering at the Technical University of Budapest, graduating just before moving to Canada in 1957. He eventually settled in Vancouver where his father started to teach at the University of BC, which hosted the re-established Sopron Faculty of Forestry. It was in Vancouver in 1964 where he met his future bride, Martha. The same year Zoltan started his dream job as Chief Surveyor at the Britannia Beach underground copper mine. He eventually went on to work for the City of Port Moody later in his career. in 1966, Zoltan and Martha bought a beautiful home along the shores of the Capilano River where they raised their two sons.
Zoltan liked to ride motorcycles and listen to Hungarian gypsy music. Later in his life, he fulfilled a personal challenge by earning his private pilot’s license. He enjoyed flying around the Lower Mainland, taking many guests along with him over the years. But his favorite activity was being with his family, children, and grandchildren. He loved going out to watch their sporting and school activities. After 51 years at the house in North Vancouver, Zoltan moved to Calgary in 2017.
Zoltan was a compassionate and amiable gentleman who loved his wife and family, and supported his church and other charities. He was a great listener and would provide thoughtful advice and encouragement to those who sought it from him. Everybody he met loved his warm and sweet personality and the way he made everyone feel like a dear friend. He will be sorely missed but the family feels infinitely blessed to have shared in his life.
The family is grateful to the caring and loving staff at AgeCare Skypoint in Calgary, where he most recently resided. Also, deep thanks are extended to the physicians and nursing staff at Peter Lougheed Centre who cared for Zoltan so compassionately during the last week of his life.
A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Wednesday, January 9 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church, 1810 East 7th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. with the Reverend Denes Lakatos officiating. Interment to take place at Capilano View Cemetery the following day at noon. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Zoltan may be made to one of his favourite charities, the Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver.
