Remona was born in a small elevator town near Yorkton, Saskatchewan, on February 4, 1929. She passed away peacefully with her beloved Edwin, husband of 66 years, by her side, on December 28, 2018, at her home in Trinity Care Centre, Penticton, B.C. Remona grew up as a middle child with 5 brothers, Herman, Clifford, Winston, Alton and Earl, all of whom have gone before. She loved them dearly, along with their parents, Martha and Albert Knoll. No stranger to hard work, Remona knew how to dig the soil, sew and mend anything, knit, gather eggs, can fruit and vegetables, and trap gophers. After graduating from highschool, she met her future husband, Edwin. They were introduced by Edwin’s cherished sister, Alma, who was a mutual friend, and we are all grateful to her, as this was a truly amazing life partnership.
Remona worked as a telephone operator, and then became a homemaker. She was a loving mother to her two daughters, Beryl (Volker Braun) and Vivian (John Surkan.)
She is also missed and loved by her grandsons, Neil and Nathan Surkan, who lived close enough to grow up in her arms, her camper, and her kitchen, and by her two grandchildren in Calgary, Monica and Austin Braun. Remona loved to sing, and although she struggled with Alzheimer’s disease for the last 9 years, it did not rob her of the ability to remember the words and tunes of many songs. This was such a blessing. Remona was a kind, caring, generous woman who will be remembered always by Edwin, her family, friends, and the dedicated staff at Trinity Care Centre in Penticton. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Chris Toneff for making her last years better. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, and a celebration of her life will take place during warmer weather. If you wish to make a donation in Remona’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, that would be so appreciated.
