Obituary for Mona Margaret Buckerfield
Mona Margaret Buckerfield, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20th, 2019 in Bracebridge. Mona was born November 23, 1923 in Gravenhurst. After completing secondary school in Gravenhurst, Mona attended Teacher’s College in Toronto and taught for many years in Simcoe and Muskoka counties. Mona graduated from the University of Toronto and was a proud alumnus of Trinity College (1955).
Mona was very interested in geneaology and used her knowledge and skills to help many people in Muskoka to research their own family histories. She enjoyed working in her garden, collecting and researching stamps, and corresponding with her wide group of friends and family. Mona loved cats and cared for a series of strays and rescues named Tommy at her home in Gravenhurst. She loved England and all things British and made several visits during her lifetime. Mona was a member of St. James Anglican Church in Gravenhurst and an active member of the community.
Mona was predeceased by her parents (Wilfred and Mona) and by her brothers Edward and James. She leaves her sister-in-law Marie (Rochester Hills, Michigan), and nieces and nephews James (Geneva, Switzerland), Neil (Port Dover, ON), Helen (Burlington, ON), Lynn (Mississauga, ON), and David (Xcalak, Mexico) and Charles (Stockton, California), Bruce (Atlanta, Georgia) and Lori (Commerce Township, Michigan) as well as great nieces and nephews and cousins.
Mona’s family thank the staff and physicians of South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge, Granite Ridge Retirement Residence in Gravenhurst, and The Pines Long-Term Care Home in Bracebridge for the kindness, compassion and expertise they provided to Mona in the final months of her life. In addition, we thank Mona’s wide circle of friends and neighbours for their companionship and care. She will be missed by many.
Family, friends, neighbours and members of the community are invited to celebrate Mona’s life. Visitation on Thursday, January 24, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Cavill-Turner Funeral Home, 215 Bay St. Gravenhurst; funeral service on Friday, January 25 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Anglican Church, 191 Hotchkiss St., Gravenhurst. Mona will be interred at St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery in Ullswater, Ontario in the spring.
