Peacefully at her home in Tillsonburg with her loving family by her side on Thursday, January 25, 2019, at the age of 77 years. Karen was the loving wife of Richard (Dick) Gallagher for nearly 59 years. She was an amazing mom and best friend to daughter Kathy (Glenn) James, son Chris (Brenda). She was a cherished grandmother to Matthew (Lisa) James, Mitchell (Stephanie) James, Danielle (Adam) Beer, Amanda Gallagher, Karlie (Chris) Gallagher, Brad, Reanna, Nathan and Rachel Munn. Proud “GG” to Sidney and Dylan James, and Aria Beer.
Karen will also be missed by her sister Muriel (Russell) McCrory, sister-in-law Marlene Gravefell, Lynn Evans (Sylvia), and many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbours. Predeceased by her parents Muriel and Josiah Dixon, and brother Dennis Dixon.
Karen enjoyed doing crafts such as ceramics, macramé and knitting. She knitted heavy wool sweaters for every member of her family. Once Karen and Dick started wintering in Florida she began volunteering at Zooworld in Panama City Beach, where she wore with pride, a badge identifying her as a Class 1 Volunteer. While living in Port Stanley, Karen became involved in small animal rehabilitation. She was known as the “Squirrel Lady”, raising abandoned baby squirrels from infancy to adulthood and then releasing them back into the wild. The Gallagher family would like to express a special thank-you to nurses Sharon and Kaitlyn of Care Partners for their compassionate and loving care of Karen. Thank-you to her family doctor, Dr. J. Sohal. Cremation has taken place. Friends and relatives will gather at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) on Friday, February 01, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. A celebration of life for Karen will be held in Ostrander’s Funeral Home Chapel at 2:30 p.m. following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation, Mt. Brydges or the Ontario SPCA would be appreciated by the Gallagher family.
