Obituary of Jim Kourles
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Kourles on Friday, January 25, 2019, peacefully, surrounded by his family. Born on January 17, 1926 in Elaiohori, Greece, He was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Konstantina; his sisters Sofia Sfyris, and Fani Katsiris; and his brother Panayioti. Jim is survived by his loving, caring wife of over 60 years, Irene; his sons Nick (Margaret) and Peter (Stella); his special nephew/other ‘son’ Kosta Sfyris; grandchildren Demitri, Sofia, Dimitri, Pano, Evangelia and Zoe; several Godchildren; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jim was 93, an outstanding man who lived an incredible life story. He was an entrepreneur with an adventurous spirit. He was hardworking, honest, modest, kind and a great leader. He was a selfless husband, father and Grandfather giving all he had. He never spoke a bad word about anyone. He was fair and loving. He will be missed for who he was, what he did for others, and what he stood for.
Due to the ravages of World War 2 and the Greek Civil war, Jim only had the opportunity to complete a Grade 4 education. As a child and later a soldier, he turned to Canada in search of a better life.
He arrived in Canada in 1954 through the Halifax pier and made his way through Montreal and Calgary eventually settling in Kitimat, and Prince George, BC.
In 1962, he set out with the love of his life, his wife Irene, in their Pontiac Strato-Chief via New York to travel across Europe. On their return in 1963 they came to Saskatchewan where Jim started the Ambassador Cafe and Rodo’s Pizza in Moose Jaw, Gravelbourg and Regina. He worked tirelessly until 1998 when he retired and began alternating summers in Greece and winters in Canada (with his grandchildren).
The family would like to thank Dr. Morris, ICU Drs. Rao, Rudovics and Arthur, and nurse Dennis for their physical care along with Father Spyridon Vandoros for his spiritual care.
A special thank you to all the staff and wonderful people from the restaurants who became like family.
Prayers will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 6:30 pm. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Both services will take place at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, 3000 Argyle Street, Regina, SK.
In lieu of flowers, those so wishing, may make memorial donations in Jim’s name to Smile of the Child (www.hamogelo.gr) or to St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Regina, SK.

Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Jim
