Jennie Rycroft
Jennie was born Jemima Adele Pottle in Back Bay, Labrador on December 31, 1936. She was the eldest of nine children born to Henry and Gladys Pottle. She met Monty (Laurence) Rycroft in Goose Bay, Labrdor when he was stationed there in the Air Force and she worked on base as a waitress. Monty and Jennie were married in Goose Bay on July 16, 1954. They had one child, Helen. With Monty’s military career they lived from Comox, BC to Goose Bay, NL and many bases in betweeen. Jennie worked as a waitress in Goose Bay and in Rivers, MB . Jennie did childcare in Calgary, Alberta when Monty was posted there. They continued to live the military lifestyle until Monty retired in 1973. He answered an ad for a position as Park Warden at Westward Ho Park and got the job. They moved to Westward Ho Park in 1973 and have been in the area ever since. They worked as partners at the park for nine years until 1982. They moved to Eagle Hill and later to Sundre.
Jennie and Monty had one grandson Brett and two grandchildren Jacob and Emily. They doted on their grandson and because of that, Brett has many fond and treasured memories with them. Jennie’s interests included bowling, curling, the rifle club, gardening and spending time with her family and friends. She also very much enjoyed the camping and fishing she and Monty did plenty of over the years.
In 2014 Monty passed away and she lived in her own mobile home with help from family, friends and the health care system. She moved into the senior’s home in Lacombe in January of 2018. In August she came back to live in Sundre at the Mountain View Senior’s Lodge. Jennie’s health declined and she passed away on January 19, 2019.
She is survived by her siblings Mary, Betty, Lester, Levi, Irene, Rhonda and Cindy. Also by her daughter Helen (Albert), Brett, Jacob and Emily. She was predeceased by her father Henry, mother Gladys, husband Monty and brother Joe.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no funeral service but there will be a private family gathering at a later date. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
