Obituary for Elva Bernice Douglas (Sheffield)
Elva passed away in hospital 15 January 2019, with her sister by her side. She is survived by her husband Bill Douglas, her sister Wanda Munro (Tom), brother-in-law Doug Charland (Rhena, predeceased 2008), her nephews Shawn, Brent, Kim (Sandra and their children Kate and Grace), Scott, her aunts and uncles Everett, Geraldine, and Grant, and many cousins and friends too numerous to count.
Raised in Tincap Ontario, the second daughter of her parents Evelyn (Leeder) and Richard Sheffield (predeceased). Elva pursued a career as a medical laboratory technologist while maintaining a lifelong love affair with horses and gardening. An avid gardener, she and Bill were familiar faces for many years, selling her home-grown produce at various fresh markets in the Brockville area. She enjoyed conversation and debate, engaging with neighbours, and with the many work colleagues and patients she assisted at the Brockville General Hospital, MDS Laboratories, and Prescott Family Medicine for Dr. G. Bhatt, whom she held in high regard. Her nephews will particularly cherish her memory in the recollection of the way she doted on them in every possible way. Elva was well known at many local fairs where she participated in driving competitions with her horses, winning numerous awards. Her dedication to horses, including adopting and caring for a blind mare, were a testament to her life skills, integrity and compassion. Elva’s singular courage, strength, humour, and love of family will be remembered, and deeply missed. A private interment ceremony will be held at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland with arrangements entrusted to Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel in Brockville. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held on Sunday, February 3, 2019 from 1-4 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 13 Quabbin Rd., Mallorytown.
