Obituary for Andrij Makuch
Andrij Makuch M.A., passed away suddenly on Friday, January 18, 2019 at the age of 62. Beloved son of the late Rev. Ivan and Kateryna Makuch, Andrij was taken from us far too early and will be sadly missed by his daughters, Larisa Makuch (Taras Pawluk) and Tania Donahoe (Mark); and son, John Zenon Makuch; grandchildren Ivanka, Lazar and Lukian; brothers, Nestor and Stephen (Marie) Makuch; former spouses, Tamara Hrechuch and Maryanne McAleese; as well as extended family, colleagues and friends. Andrij was born in Lethbridge, AB and grew up in Victoria, BC. He completed his Master’s degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He then lived in Saskatoon for several years, where he served as Executive Director of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee (UCC) and was an active member of the greater Ukrainian community. During the past 30 years, Andrij made Toronto his home while he achieved his life’s work as an accomplished scholar. He was a manuscript editor of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine, University of Toronto Press. A researcher and author of academic articles and reviews, his work has been published in several scholastic periodicals. He was also a research coordinator of the Ukrainian-Canadian Program at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) and most recently held the position of Senior Manuscript Editor of the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine in the Toronto office of the CIUS. Andrij was also associate director of the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium and contributed to many more academic and community forums. A kind and gentle soul, Andrij will be fondly remembered for his passion for knowledge, his love of music and film, his joy in recreational activities, especially cribbage, his culinary skills and his humour.
