Alex Bohdanewycz March 18 1923 January 10 2019

Alex (Oleksij) Bohdanewycz peacefully passed away January 10th 2019 in the loving arms of his family. Born March 18, 1923 in Lviv, Ukraine, Alex spent most of his childhood working on his family farm until he was captured during World War II at a young age of 18. He spent three years in a German Concentration Camp where he was forced to work in a coal mine and dug trenches. After multiple attempts, Alex eventually escaped and began an arduous journey to safety where along the way, he met his late wife, Anna, as they both boarded a ship to England. Alex and Anna married in Littlebourough, England and had two children, Vera and Peter. In search of better conditions for his wife’s health, Alex brought his family to Toronto, Ontario where he worked 40 years as a precision fabricator making commercial planes and fighter jets for Boeing. Alex had a profound love for his family and approached everything in life with intent and precision. He would be the first person to offer a helping hand, or give the shirt off of his back. He loved gardening with his late wife, climbing trees, watching sunsets and scenery with sunflower seeds, building the most intricate paper airplanes for his grandchildren, and making pierogies with his family. He was a true gentleman who enjoyed making people laugh. And he loved to dance, especially with his docha. Alex will be adoringly remembered by his two children, Vera and Peter, three grandchildren, Michael, Julie (Jeff), and Krista, and two great-grandchildren Jayden Richard and Kai Oleksij. Our family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Humber River Hospital on floor 9 west in Toronto who went above and beyond the normal care during his last week. We would also like to give a very special thank you to the caring and nurturing staff at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Center in Etobicoke. Friends will be received at the Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd. W. (at 14th St., between Islington and Kipling Aves., 416-259-3705) on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 11am to 1pm. A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel at 1pm. Interment to follow at St. John’s Dixie Cemetery. Messages of Condolence may be placed at RidleyFuneralHome.com.
