Wallace James Ryan
February 03, 1931 – December 14, 2018
Passed peacefully away at the age of 87, Wallace J. Ryan, well known grocer and businessman.
Mr. Ryan is predeceased by his parents, John J. and Amelia (Westcott) Ryan and brothers Ron, John, Austin, and sons Michael and David. Leaving to mourn his wife, Margaret (Butler) and seven children, Gerard (Roxanne), Robert (Evelyn), Wallace, Jeff, Lesley, Liza, Ruth Anna (Martin), from his first marriage to Ruth (Kavanagh), his brother Aidan (Vera) and sister-in-law, Marie Ryan of Thornhill, Ontario. Fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Kali, Hannah, Zachery, Jessica, Leslie, Stephanie, Stephan, Alex, Mackenzie, Morgan, 10 great grandchildren, and many nephews, nieces, and friends. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Tiffany Village for their wonderful care and kind attention they gave Mr. Ryan.
Mr. Ryan was born and raised in St. John’s and attended St. Bonaventure’s College. He worked with his father, a former WW1 Blue Puttee, at Royal Grocery on Holdsworth Street and helped expand it up onto King’s Road and eventually out into Donovan’s Industrial Park, becoming one of the first businesses to establish a location at the edge of town. He eventually moved back to King’s Road where he ran the Market and co-founded Moo Moo’s Ice Cream with his daughter, Liza and became a pillar in the neighborhood. Mr. Ryan always had a kind word for everyone and a smile that lives on in the memories of all who came to know and love him. He was known as a gentle and honest man who treated others like he wanted to be treated.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 from 2 – 4pm and 7- 9 pm at Cauls Funeral Home on Le Marchant Road in St. John’s. No funeral by request, inurnment to take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you do a good deed for someone today. Mr. Ryan was a very generous man and would have loved to see that spirit of giving shared with as many people as possible.
