Obituary for
Stuart Hartley
It’s with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that Stuart has lost his eight-year battle with prostate cancer. Missing him deeply are Patricia, his devoted wife of 57 years, his daughters, Caroline [Jeff Stephenson] and Susan [Sid Gillispie], his son Stephen [Lorrie Waters] and seven grandchildren; Jessica, Robert, Sophia, Alexander, Olivia, Cameron and Ben. He is also survived by his sister Carole and brother-in-law, Bruce Radley and brother Trevor [Julie]. Predeceased by his beloved Mother, Isobel Moir Hartley.
Stuart was born on April 3rd, 1938 in the UK and graduated as a Chartered Accountant in 1959. Recognizing that perhaps greater opportunities existed abroad, he accepted a job with McDonald Currie in Toronto and became a landed immigrant. In December 1960 he married Pat, the love of his life. Stuart did not want a career in auditing and had the good fortune to get a job with IBM Canada.
He held a number of interesting positions, culminating in an eighteen-month assignment in Brazil as Director of Finance for IBM’s Latin America Region. When that assignment was over, he rejoined IBM Canada becoming the Vice President of Finance and Planning. His next and final position was Executive Vice President and CFO of the Molson Companies from which he retired in 1999.
During his time with the Molson Companies he served on the boards of Canada Malting, Reno Depot, the National Ballet School and the Montreal Canadiens. He was an active member of the Financial Executives’ Institute of Canada and the Conference Board’s Financial Executives Council and on March 25,1994 was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
He also found time for play. He was one of four parents who banded together to form the Thornhill Junior Soccer programme and he had the good fortune to be invited to play four rounds of golf at Augusta National, breaking 100 each round. He was a good tennis player, but golf was always his favorite activity and the most difficult to have to give up. He and Pat played golf at the Donalda Club and later Thornhill Country Club. Since his retirement, they have enjoyed winters on Longboat Key in Florida. They have been fortunate to have made so many friends, some of whom date back to the early 1960’s.
Stuart never regretted choosing Canada as his home and was always very proud of his family. He was a loving father, grandpa and papa to his children and grandchildren. He told us that, “all things considered it has been a very fulsome and enjoyable life”.
The Hartley family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the compassionate care Stuart received from Dr. Singal, Dr. Bhardwaj, Dr. Raheem and Dr. Yuen and the staffs of the Southlake Cancer Centre and the Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket.
The funeral service will be held at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home (8911 Woodbine Avenue, Markham) on Friday November 30th at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Margaret Bahen Hospice at www.myhospice.ca/support-my-hospice/ would be appreciated.
Order Flowers
