Service Details
On December 9, 2017, after a brief fight with cancer, angels came to guide our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, auntie and friend home. With her children by her side, Ruth Eileen (Jeske) Sagert passed away at the Swan River Valley Hospital. She was 77 years of age.
Ruth was born August 11, 1940 on the family farm in the Ravensworth District. She was the fourth child of seven born to Bill and Della Jeske. Times were tough raising seven children, so as a young girl Ruth learned to work hard with her family. Everyone had to help with the daily chores. She would gather sheaves, pick weeds, milk cows, garden, and help her mom with cooking.
She attended Ravensworth School with her brothers and sisters, where each day they had to walk uphill both ways! She enjoyed school, sports and especially loved baseball. In the spring of 1957 Ruth went to Winnipeg to work in a plastic bag factory. She soon discovered big city life was not for her and returned home to Minitonas. It was that summer when she hit a homerun during a baseball game and caught the attention of a local farmer. The rest is history! On that night Ervin gave her a ride home and they were married nine months later, on March 8, 1958. Ruth and Ervin took over the family farm on top of Minitonas hill where they were soon blessed with three children, Pearl, Ryan and Derek.
Used to hard work, Ruth easily fell into the role of farm wife and wonderful mother. She could operate pretty much anything on the farm. She told stories about milking cows and feeding the pigs and chickens, all the while looking after three small kids. She quickly turned into the greatest cook ever. Using fresh meat and vegetables from her large garden, Mom would make the best meals. She would deliver full course meals out to the field with a huge smile and that infectious laugh that’s known by everyone!
Mom was full of life and the most generous person. She never missed anyone’s birthday or anniversary, probably because of her “photographic” memory. She remembered dates, times and numbers of almost every person she knew, right up to her passing. She was a true giver and needed nothing but a smile in return. Nonetheless, a bouquet of flowers would make her day! She loved her flowers, especially red or yellow roses.
In her younger days Mom enjoyed curling and “bonspieling” with the girls. In her spare time she liked reading and listening to her favourite music, especially her “Johnny Reid”. Some of her other hobbies were embroidering and sewing. She made many gymnastic and skating outfits as well as sleepers and pajamas for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to see them wearing her pjs, we will all miss our yearly pajama pants at Christmas! Mom also loved her angels, they were everywhere! On the walls, on shelves, hanging from ledges, on windows, in her garden, in her car and of course on her jewelry. Once word was out that she collected them, she received loads of them from family and friends.
Mom loved having friends and family around her, nothing made her happier that being with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Whether it was a planned visit or one of the boys dropping in for lunch she cherished each and every moment. Most often visits from grandkids would result in a generous “payment” snuck to them for a simple job done (like fifty bucks for dusting her tv!) Mom treasured all holidays and expecially Christmas time with her family.
Mom enjoyed spending time with her siblings, which included fishing trips to Thompson, casino runs to the states, trips to Mexico and many family weddings and gatherings. They did their best to make a point of getting together for each other’s birthdays. We heard so many stories of the troubles they would get into and fun times had.
Ruth and Ervin spent many happy years living on the farm enjoying a wonderful life with their family. Finally, in the winter of 2016, they retired and moved off the farm and into a beautiful home in Swan River. Mom loved her new house!
Ruth leaves to cherish her memory; Ervin, loving husband of 59 years; daughter, Pearl (Dave Gervais) of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, their children Keith (Karla) and their children Kaynan and Kyson, Coralie (Jared Peppler) and their children Eva and Nate; son Ryan (Samara) of Minitonas, their children Presley and Madison; son Derek (Lana) of Minitonas, their children Aaron and Bailey; sisters Lil Sokal, Ann Higgs (Ed); twin brothers Les (Muriel) and Wes (Sylvia), and Garry (Kathy); brother in law Garry (Gaile) Sagert, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Della Jeske; in laws Henry and Natalie Sagert; sister Sarah Knispel; sister in law Anne Tulman; and brothers in law Ed Tulman, Emil Knispel and Paul Sokal.
Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Ruth may be made to the Swan Valley Health Facilities Foundation, Palliative Care Ward, Box 1450, Swan River, Manitoba R0L 1Z0
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in Minitonas, Manitoba with Pastor Neal Effa officiating. Interment followed in the Minitonas Cemetery.
