Robert Lee « Bob » DeWitt
1939-2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Lee DeWitt
« Bob » announce his death. He died peacefully at the
Pine Grove Nursing Home on January 20th, 2018, at the age of 78. He
was born in Tracy New Brunswick on February 13th, 1939.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Katrina DeWitt
[Truffen] and two sons, of whom he is very proud, Mark DeWitt and Luke
DeWitt, his wife Cathy [Albert] and beloved granddaughter Rachel (she
always made him smile) of Fredericton, one brother Gerald DeWitt of
Grand Lake and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his
parents Hazen and Grace DeWitt of Fredericton, one sister Mary [Hall]
and one brother Albert of Moncton.
Bob’s education was obtained in various city
schools. He received his B.A. in 1960 and his M.A. in 1965 from the
University of New Brunswick. Prior to graduate work he served as a
regular Army Officer at Camp Gagetown. He completed his doctoral work
at the University of Toronto and with a research fellowship he did a
study of Fogo Island for the Department of Social and Economic
Development of Newfoundland. He taught at the University of
New Brunswick, Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University
of Maine at Orono. After deciding on a career change, he applied and
received a Beaverbrook Scholarship in Law and returned to the
University of New Brunswick where he obtained his L.L.B. in
1973.
He was a partner at the law firm of Ashfield, DeWitt and
LeBlanc and practiced law for 37 years in Fredericton. During this
time, he was attached to the Judge Advocate General’s
office. He had a sterling reputation as one of the best legal minds in
New Brunswick.
Bob was a very private and proud man who was kind and
generous and loved his family and his Standard Poodles Jack and Max.
He enjoyed camping with his friends and family along the coastal
regions of the Maritimes and Maine. He will be sorely missed. For
several years he was on the board of the Kindness Club, a life member
of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, and a life member of the York Sunbury
Historical Society. He was also a past member of the Fredericton and
Canadian Kennel Clubs. An avid reader, writer and photographer, many
will probably remember him for his wit and dry sense of
humor.
Cremation has already taken place and there will be a
« Celebration of his Life » to be announced at a later
date.
In Bob’s memory donations can be made to the
Kindness Club Foundation, Parkinson Society or a charity of the
donor’s choice. Remembrances would be greatly appreciated
and can be sent to McAdam’s Funeral Home, Fredericton.
Special thanks to Pine Grove Nursing Home and staff for their
loving care and homey environment.
