Robert Chipman Cushing
April 18, 1932 – April 20, 2018
CUSHING, Robert Chipman « Bob » – age 86 of Greenwood, NS passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Bridgewater, he was a son of the late Israel and Frances (Oxner) Cushing. Growing up, he was an avid athlete, playing rugby, baseball, and running track. He also spent time in Army Cadets and as a page at the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. During his youth, Bob worked at the Lunenburg Foundry, developing his mechnical skills on marine diesel engines. His keen interest in all things mechanical prompted him to join the RCAF as an aero engine technician. The Air Force took him to Winnepeg, Germany, Comox, Greenwood, Shearwater, Summerside, and back to Greenwood, where Bob retired after 32 years of service. While in Greenwood, Bob spent 14 years playing the bass drum in the C.F.B. Greenwood Base Band. Always a believer in spending quality time with loved ones, his free time, vacations, and holidays were spent in the company of family and close friends. Some of Bob’s fondest memories are of his annual trips camping at Risser’s Beach Provincial Park. This was a « home base » for regular excursions to the South Shore Exhibition, the Bush Island government wharf for fish, and to the clam flats at Risser’s beach to dig for clams. He was well known for his sense of humour and did his best
to lighten the mood and brighten spirits wherever he went. He always had a funny story, joke, or anecdote to share with anyone. He has certainly left behind more smiles than tears. He was very involved in his community, serving with Argus, now Markland Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and various other concordant bodies. Bob also served his community with many organizations including Kingston United Church and as a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels. Bob was recognized as the Volunteer of The Year for Kingston in 2004 and Kings County, Nova Scotia in 2006. Bob, or Grampie, as he was affectionately known to his grandchildren, will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Bob is survived by his wife, the former Dianne Anderson, Greenwood; daughter, Andra Lee (David) Cushing-Ogden, Edmonton, AB; sons, Duane Robert Cushing, Edmonton, AB; Lance Chipman Cushing, Greenwood; sister, Frances (Ian) MacDonald, New Glasgow; grandchildren Sydney, Addison, Conner, Christopher and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother David and grandson Liam. In keeping with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Masonic service to take place followed by a Celebration of life starting at 2:00pm, Sunday, April 29, 2018, at Kingston United Church, with Rev. Gayle MacDonald officiating,
