Richard (Dick) Eaton Burwell was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 14, 1930.
He began his life as a traveler when his family spent a year in Paris just before the beginning of World War Two. He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH and received a BA from Harvard University, and a Masters in Fine Arts from Oxford University before serving in the Army in Psychological Warfare in Tokyo. Upon his discharge, he and a friend spent the next six months traveling on a shoestring through Southeast Asia, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Jordan and Egypt. Returning home, Dick joined ABC in New York as a radio news writer. On a vacation, he met his wife, Letitia Pearre (also on vacation) in Port au Prince, Haiti. She was studying Arabic in New York City after taking part in an archeology dig in Jordan. They were married in Baltimore in November 2, 1957.
Dick taught at Duke and Iowa State Universities before obtaining his Doctorate of Fine Arts at Yale University. Dick went on to write novels and plays while teaching fine arts at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. He served as professor there for 33 years before retiring in 1998 to Franconia, NH. In addition to his passion for traveling, teaching, and writing, Dick loved attending theater and classical music concerts and time with his family.
Dick is survived by his six children: Anthony Burwell (Los Angeles, CA); Christopher Burwell (Concord, NH); Angelica Burwell (Lunenburg, NS); Miranda Burwell Young (Franconia, NH); Mercy Burwell Colberg (St. Louis, MO), Rebecca Burwell (Northampton, MA) and his eleven grandchildren.
