Opal « Ethelda » Cator
CATOR, Opal « Ethelda », August 22, 1921 – Vancouver, British Columbia, October 31, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta. Ethelda was a vibrant woman that was loved, is missed and will always be cherished by her family. Opal « Ethelda » was born on August 22, 1921 and spent her childhood, went to school, played sports, worked hard, grew up, and made many lifelong friends in the farming community of Shackleton, Saskatchewan; a place like none other in her mind. Shackleton was where she met the « best husband in the world », Tom Cator. After marrying, Ethelda and Tom spent a few years living at a Teacherage while Tom taught school, and then moved to their farm north of Shackleton where they raised two daughters and spent many hardworking years. They both loved their farm – a little spot nestled beneath rolling hills where they went for walks to the « Spring », ski-dooed and entertained family and friends. Ethelda could also get out and work the cattle, milk the cows and drive truck with the best of them. She worked that farm very hard, baked the best pies and buns ever and made sure her house was spotless. The household motto was « if you aren’t going to do it right you may as well not do it at all ». Ethelda’s grandchildren were her heart and joy and she made sure they were engaged in learning about the fun part of life on the farm; teaching them to sleigh ride down the hills (watching out for cactus, of course), shooting eggs off the fence posts, playing anty-I-over at the barn and fishing at the river. Her great grandchildren followed in their parents footsteps and loved coming to the farm. Always together, Ethelda was lost when her Tom passed away but insisted on staying on the farm until she was 90. She moved to a Calgary retirement home, and although she was able to partake in her love affair with shopping for clothes and makeup, she longed to return home to Saskatchewan, In God’s hands, she will now be home tucked in beside her husband where she will be at peace. We are immensely grateful for having her for so long, but we will miss her forever. She will be remembered constantly and fondly. Loved ones that cleared the path for Ethelda were her husband, Tom, her mother, Opal Rule Gagnier, father Ambers Drinkwalter, sister Fern, brothers Harry, Earl and Herbert, and nephews Wayne Smith and Gary Johnson. Loved ones that will miss Ethelda until they meet again are her daughters Dawn Forbes and Darlene (Bob) Thompson; Grandchildren Denise Thompson Ogston (Ken), Sherise Thompson Schultz (Brian), Lane Forbes (Nikki-Jo), Shawn Forbes (Shauna); Great Grandchildren Ali Ogston, Candace Ogston, Bradley Schultz, Lauren Schultz, Brittany Dickie, Braden Forbes, Hayley Forbes, Luke Forbes; Great Great Granddaughter Addison Gabriel; and her nieces, nephews and cousins. And so the story goes on until we see our Mom and Grandma again. We love you and miss you Mom. At Ethelda’s request there will be no funeral. A private Graveside Service will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Swift Current, SK on November 9, 2018. Condolences may be forwarded through www.warrensfuneralhome.com.
