Norbert Henry Nordmann December 28 1930 July 7 2018 (age 87)

Norbert Henry Nordmann was born Dec. 28, 1930 at Cudworth, SK to Joseph Nordmann and Zita Billesberger. Norbert was the third youngest in a family of 13 children. He was raised on the family farm in the Cudworth area but moved to Naicam for his high school years. After graduating from high school he worked for the CIBC for 3 years and spent 1 year as a guard at the Prince Albert Penitentiary. He managed to save enough money to attend Teachers’ College and in 1956 his dream of becoming a teacher was realized! For the next 10 years, while teaching full time, he took correspondence and summer classes at the U of S and completed his B.A. and B.Ed in the fall of 1966. He taught in the communities of Beaton, Meath Park, Wild Rose, and Cumberland House. Norbert also taught at St. Mary’s High School and The Academy of the Presentation of Mary in Prince Albert, with one year teaching at the jail. Norbert loved to cook and in 1970 decided to move to North Vancouver and try his hand at operating a restaurant. After 2 years he decided it wasn’t for him and returned to his true calling of teaching. In 1976 he bought a lot at Little Bear Lake and took a year off from teaching to live in the bush and build his cabin. Many of his teacher pals built cabins there as well and Norbert spent many summers enjoying their company! In 1983, after 3 years of teaching at Cumberland Town School, he decided to retire and for the next 12 years his cabin at Little Bear became his permanent home. Norbert never married and the one true regret of his life was not having children of his own. He absolutely loved kids! Fortunately, coming from a big family, he had lots of nieces and nephews and spent much time visiting and hosting guests at his home at Little Bear. He was a favorite uncle to many of us! Norbert was a hard-working man who loved singing, berry picking, gardening, card playing, travelling, and spending time with family and friends. Uncle Norbert moved back to Prince Albert in 1995 and sold his much loved place at the lake. He immediately began as a volunteer on the children’s ward at the VIC Hospital. His time spent there comforting the little ones which, in turn, gave him a new purpose for his life. Eventually, as his health deteriorated, Norbert became a resident of Parkland Terrace Nursing Home in Shellbrook. On July 7, 2018, Norbert’s last wish was finally granted when God called him home.
Norbert is survived by: 3 sisters – Delphine Paquette, Bernadette Racette and Adele Mohr, his brother-in-law, Alban Herzog, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by; his parents, Josph and Zita Nordmann, his siblings; Marie Lozinski, Hildegarde “Hilda” Frey, Monica Nordmann, Loretta Ermine, Joseph “Joe” Nordmann, Laura Herzog, Leona Nordmann, Edwin Nordmann (died in infancy), and Donald “Don” Nordmann.
The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 at St. Agatha’s RC Church in Shellbrook, SK. Interment at South Hill Cemetery in Prince Albert. Memorial donations may be directed to Shellbrook and Districts Health Services Foundation Inc. – Long Term Care.
