Murray Johnston 2018

Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
JOHNSTON, Murray Douglas – October 15, 1930 to September 1, 2018
Murray passed away peacefully in the early hours of September 1, 2018. He is survived by his sister Barbara Shaw of London, Ontario and his brother Russell Johnston of Hamilton, as well as several much loved nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his loving wife Jean Johnston (nee. Stapleton) of 57 years, his mother Helen Stewart (nee. McDiarmid) of Stoney Creek, and his sister Helen Jaffray, also of Stoney Creek.
Murray was born and raised in Hamilton. He was a printer by trade, and learned his craft at the Hamilton Spectator. He later spent time at the Toronto Star and Galt Reporter, and retired from the St.Catharines Standard.
He loved sports. As a young man, he was a passionate swimmer, baseball player, and basketball player. He was particularly proud of his water polo days and received a Hamilton civic ring when the team won a national championship in 1948. Murray always laughed at this success and gave credit to his fellow players. His highly regarded swimming coach, Jimmy Thompson, once told him that if he didn’t practice his swimming skills he’d place him on the women’s synchronized swimming team. Murray decided to play goalie after that. Later in life, he took up golf and developed a keen interest in games of chance. He had a soft spot for the horses.
There is no question, however, that Murray’s heart belonged to his wife Jean. They had a whirlwind romance in 1960 that led to an enduring and mutually-supportive marriage. While pursuing their own careers, including Jean’s successful foray into municipal politics in St.Catharines, they always made time for each other. They traveled the world, found amazing food in surprising places, and made new friends wherever they went. They never stopped dancing, laughing and entertaining.
In keeping with Murray’s wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Murray’s life will take place at PLEASANTVIEW FUNERAL HOME (2000 Merrittville Hwy at the corner of Hwy # 20) 905-892-1699 on Sat September 15, beginning with visitation from 10-11 am, a service in the funeral chapel at 11am with interment and a memorial reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Wildlife Federation would be appreciated. Murray’s family is grateful to the staff of St. Peter’s at Chedoke, in Hamilton, for their attentive care during the past year. You are invited to share your memories and condolences on-line at www.pleasantviewcemetery.ca
