Maureen Magas (Greer)
Passed away in a tragic accident on the morning of Saturday, July 14, 2018. She was an outstanding woman and will be dearly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was born September 10th, 1959 in Hamilton to Stella and James Greer. Growing up in Burlington, the family vacationed at Wasaga Beach every summer. Maureen and her beloved brother Murray would spend the week collecting pop bottles, which they would return to the store so that they could get money to spend on penny candy and fun activities that they could do together. She attended MM Robinson High School, where she played on the field hockey team. She was a true daddy’s girl, happily spending time walking with him around the neighborhood when he fell ill with heart troubles. After graduation, she attended Sheridan College for accounting where she met lifelong friend Sindy Chapman nee Van Wieren. While working at Safeway during high school she met fellow Burlingtonian Zoran Magas. Maureen, Zoran, Sindy and her now husband Drew were the best of friends and did everything together – including weddings and babies! Maureen married Zoran June 4th, 1983 and went on to have 3 children – Micheal, Stephanie and Kyle. She was the most incredible mother to her children, spending every moment she had with them. She was a regular volunteer at her children’s’ elementary school, Champlain, chaperoning every single field trip they had and spending time helping out in the school library. All of the kids and teachers knew her by name. She was a skilled seamstress and avid knitter, often making outfits for her kids and knitting gifts for friends & family as well as their children. To continue her family’s childhood tradition, the whole family spent a week every summer at Wasaga Beach. Maureen and her husband, children, brother Murray, his wife Theresa and son Kevin would all cram into a tiny 4-bedroom cottage on Beach 2 spending the days playing football (in her case, watching) and nights playing bid euchre – the family’s favourite card game. After raising her children, Maureen went back to work. She started bookkeeping for Murray Huffman and through him she met Tracy Holmes. The two of them clicked right away and developed a lasting and special friendship. After Murray retired Tracy opened her own accounting firm in Dundas and brought Maureen along with her, the two worked together until Maureen’s untimely passing. Maureen will always be remembered as one of the most selfless and caring people anyone has ever known. To know her was to love her and she will be tremendously missed. For those who wish to pay their respects, there will be viewings at Smith’s Funeral Home on Guelph Line in Burlington on Wednesday, July 18th from 3 p.m.- 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. There will then be a Funeral Service at Smith’s on Thursday, July 19th at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow. The following week on Wednesday, July 25th at 7 p.m. a Memorial Talk will be given at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 4025 Mainway, Burlington, in the West Auditorium, all are welcome to attend.
